CARING FOR OUR KIDS – Building a healthier future!

LungNet & the Health Department take a two-phase approach encouraging better health amongst young Tasmanians through education, increased awareness and legislation.

There are times in our lives when we wear many hats, as was the case for me, firstly as State Co-Ordinator for LungNet and secondly, my secondment as Tobacco Control Officer for Northern Tasmania with Health Advancement. The role involved ensuring through education and increased awareness that Part IV of the Public Health Act 1997 was complied with. Part IV of the Public Health Act 1997 incorporates legislative requirements when selling, distributing, and displaying tobacco products.

While LungNet representatives attend schools to inform kids of the hardcore long-term health effects tobacco use can have, Health Advancement work with retailers and other members of the community to inform and encourage compliance to legislation. Non-compliance of the legislation can and has resulted in members of the public being prosecuted. The most recent case I was involved with resulted in a $6,000 fine for a man selling tobacco products to children. The defendant lived close to the primary school and seemed to be known to a number of children as a person who could for a price, or for credit, supply cigarettes. When handing down his ruling on this case the presiding Magistrate stated: “This man provided a service that should be condemned”. This is a sentiment that I am sure many of us would endorse.

Given the Health Department only employs two Tobacco Control Officers for the State, coupled with countless avenues for the sale and distribution of tobacco products to our children, it is imperative that we in the community take a pro-active approach in reporting to the Tobacco Control Officers any evidence we may have of distribution of tobacco products to children. This will enable the Tobacco Control Officers to fully investigate any allegations of breach of legislation. Contact phone numbers for the Tobacco Control Officers are 63362279 and 62334809.

You may feel that you as an individual can do little; however, I would ask you to remember the ripple effect one drop of water has in a pond! I thank you for taking the time to read this message and for your future endeavours to ensure Tasmanian kids have a healthier future.

State Co-Ordinator
