1. Nagasaki History: An Overview.

Understanding the history of the southern Japanese island of Kyushu helps to more fully appreciate the history of Nagasaki City. Nagasaki has always been significantly involved in the development of Japan as a nation. The Dutch, Chinese and the development of Christianity have all played a part into making Nagasaki what it is today. The atomic bombing in 1945 of Nagasaki was possibly the turning point of World War II.

2. The Sites of Nagasaki.

Nagasaki has many historical sites, including those related to the atomic bombing in 1945. I have made a list of the significant sites in the city and how they are related to the history of Nagasaki. It is best to read section 1 first because it is only in the context of the city's unique history that the sites can be appreciated.

3. Nagasaki Today

Nagasaki City has changed quite a lot in just the three years I have been here. There have been shopping centres built and constant improvements to the city. This section is a guide to the city, including a map and photos of the downtown area.

Nagasaki has many festivals but I will just concentrate on three: The Chinese Lantern Festival, Obon and Okunchi. I have included a few of my photos to show you what these festivals are all about.
