SAS 10th anniversery "High technology manufacturing enterprises are on the increase in Singapore and often the role of materials in these industries is crucial to their success. As a result there is a growing demand for competent Materials Engineers who have a sound understanding of the synthesis and processing, structure, properties, and performance of materials, and their inter-relationships."

Job Opporcunities for Materials Engineers

Industries requiring Materials Engineers

Industries Requiring the Expertise of Materials Engineers Materials Engineers are needed by industries whenever the more general training of mechanical, electrical, electronics and chemical engineers fall short of the demands of technology-based industries.

1. Process, Petrochemical, Pharmaceutical and Power Plants
The Materials Engineer can apply his technical expertise in the following industries as an Inspection Engineer, Quality Analysis (QA) Engineer, Quality Control (QC) Engineer, Process Engineer or R&D Engineer.

2. Laboratories
The Materials Engineer basically carry out testing or R&D work in the laboratory as a Material Testing Engineer, Failure Analysis Engineer, R&D Engineer or Non-Destructive Testing Engineer.

3. Aerospace
Industries The Materials Engineer supports the Aerospace Industry as a Process Engineer, Welding Engineer, QA/AC Engineer or Material Planner.

4. Wafer Plant & Electronics Industry
The Materials Engineer employs his expert knowledge in electronics and semiconductors as a Process Engineer, Production Engineer, R&D Engineer, Purchasing Officer/Materials Planer or QA/QX Engineer. 5. Defence Industry Here, the Materials Engineer is usually employed as an R&D Engineer, mainly concerned with the study and development of high tech materials such as Aluminum, Titanium and Composites.

6. Local Small and Medium Company
These companies are in existence to support the MNCs in the electronics industries, for example, in making injection molding and the heat treatment of tool and die. Materials Engineers are needed here to provide the necessary technical support with their in-depth knowledge of materials and engineering.

7. Construction and Shipbuilding Industries
Knowledge of Non-Destructive Testing is essential here. The Materials Engineer work as a Welding Engineer or QA/QC Engineer, dealing mainly with the inspection of welded structures.
