Tatting "Grandmother's Way"

(Rebecca Jones calls it the "Reverse Riego Method")

Recommendations for beginners
Pearl Cotton size 3 or 5 thread is a good size to be able to see each stitch and it slides very well for easy control. Light colors are easiest to see the stitches.
Use a one piece shuttle where the thread is wound onto the inside of the shuttle, no bobbin. This will allow for better thread tension control.

Preparing to Tat
Tie end of thread onto the shuttle and wind it onto the shuttle. Beginners may choose to just fill it half full to start. Later you can take the time to fill it all of the way and running over just a little.

How to Tat
Unwind about 15 inches of thread.

Right-hand: Hold shuttle in right-hand with flat sides between thumb and first finger.

Left-hand: Grasp 2“ from end of loose thread between thumb and side of first finger.

Holding the thread and shuttle

Step 1: With fingers of left-hand spread, pass shuttle over back of hand and fingers coming around making a circle (ring).

Grasp thread between thumb and first finger. Hold securely. This will be called your circle or ring thread.

All of your work will sit right here on your first finger. Your middle finger will do the work and move the thread loops down to your first finger and thumb.

Step 1 - making the ring
