First introduction of Budgerigar in Thailand Back to the past more than 100 years ago during the reign of King Rama IV-V , at that time, Thailand was known as “Siam”. We have some foreign merchants who brought their products for selling to Thai. One was merchant from Holland. The sailors were usually kept pets in their ship for pleasure and relaxing during their long journey in the ocean. Most of those pets are bird and one kind of birds which was usually known and kept was small parrot with grassy color called “Budgerigar”. The birds were passed to Thai government officers as souvenirs and some were swapped with other Thai products with Thai people. Recently, there was no Thai name for Budgerigar and we could not identify where Thai name “Hong Yok” was coming from but assumed that Thai called this bird as “Hong” which means “swan” and word “Yok” is “jade” according to its own grassy green color. Above is just a story telling from one generation to generation and we found it was closed to the fact since now a day the oldest type of birds are usually called “Holland” according to the nationality of Hollanda sailors who had firstly brought these kind of birds to Thailand. Holland Budgerigar is the smallest size bird with only 5-7 inches in length and structure is as small as sparrow . Holland birds are very popular due to its cost and colors. Around 1925, first lot of better quality Budgerigar had been imported into Thailand. It was very impressed since we found lot of improvements in size, length and colors but head is still the part which was not much improved. Twenty years later, another lots of superb quality Budgerigar were imported from England. We found much improvement in quality of head, spots and mask while length, structure are a bit improvement. After first lots imported from England, second and more were consecutively delivered during 1925-1950. From the last 40 years, keeping Budgerigar as pet has been changed to be keeping and breeding for quality improvement and contest. Not only birds importing, breeder begun to interest in book regarding Budgerigar. Lot of books were sent from England to Thai breeder direct from various farms. Some breeder had registered as membership of Budgerigar World Magazine. At present state, Internet is another channel which breeders searching for information, knowledge.
