Robert Belmares Harris
December 17, 1966 - December 14, 1995
Rob was raised in
Manhattan Beach, California. A happy, smart, and
active boy, he enjoyed reading and participated
in little league, soccer, volleyball, and
gymnastics with his friends.
Rob was fascinated by magic and taught himself
magic tricks and entertained family, friends, and
strangers.
For fun he mastered the Rubik Cube well enough to
become a local finalist from Southern California.
He learned to play the guitar and the
piano, and together with his friends formed a
band -- The Little Jerks.
At the age of 12 he discovered running and soon
became a marathon runner and later in high school
the most valuable player on the track team.
On a whim he learned breakdancing. He auditioned
and was chosen out of hundreds of breakdancers to
participate in the ceremonies at the 1984
Olympics in Los Angeles.
Music continued to be an important part of
Robs life. He deejay'd for high school
dances, local parties, and started dee-jaying at
restaurants in the community then later breaking
into the club scene in Los Angeles.
For a short time, racing motorcycles took up his
spare time and after winning a few trophies for
the Honda team, he decided to go on to other
sports. Rob enjoyed water and snow skiing and was
very competitive in skateboarding and
snowboarding. In 1995 he started wall/rock
climbing for fun and relaxation. Rob kept in
shape with jujitsu; training under the master
Royce Gracie.
While in college he supported himself by
deejaying in fraternities and as a mix master for
a local radio station. He became known, by the
Los Angeles Times, as #1 deejay in the top
Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and Los Angeles dance
clubs and also known as Deejay Racer the
rapper-d-jay on the band called Double Freak. Rob
became a partner in Artist Groove Network, a
production company founded and shared with two
close friends. He was also selected to the panel
of BillBoard Magazine and his opinion on music
was sought after by many deejays and new talented
performers. As a mix master he continued to
receive requests for projects with well-known
performers (Madonna being one of them).
During his spare time he discovered and focused
on the sport of skysurfing, soon training
intensely. Within a year and a half he won 3rd
place in the World Championships in Spain. The
next year he took the World Championship away
from the Frenchman inventor of skysurfing Patrick
deGayardon. Rob was the first American skysurfing
champion. The following year he defended his
title as World Champion at the World
Championships held in Germany, and also took the
first skysurfing championship in the
Extreme-Games. Rob was meticulous in everything
he did and kept focused with a commitment and a
passion to achieve his personal best. Through his
creativity and charisma on camera, Rob brought
skysurfing to the public as a fun and exciting
sport. During the latter part of 1995 Rob had
many ideas for a most awesome and new skysurfing
board; a board that would help skysurfers and the
sport itself become even more competitive and
exciting. This would have been another
achievement in Robs life, not only as a
skysurfer, but as an entrepreneur. His ultimate
dream for skysurfing was to some day see it as a
competitive game in The Olympics.
Rob always had fun and cherished the time he had
with the close friends he grew up with in
Manhattan Beach, playing volleyball, water and
snow skiing, snow boarding, surfing in Hawaii,
and always touching base with them for
traditional celebrations. He also had fun with
the many friends he met skysurfing, base jumping,
mountain climbing, and backpacking in Europe. He
was in television commercials, which, the few he
made to this day are still shown on television
here in the U.S. and in other countries as well.
In his travels to many parts of the world
competing in skysurfing, working on commercials,
and just having fun helping others, Rob inspired
and won many hearts -- a
world ambassador. For that and for his many
impressive accomplishments
and passionate spirit, Rob was often called, and
will be remembered as
"The Humble Champion."-- a first-class and quality human being.
Rob Harris was a very
well-known DJ and musician. Not only was he rated
the number one DJ in Los Angeles., but he also
did re-mixes on projects for well-known
performers (Madonna being one of them).
His
musical abilities inspired others in many ways.
Some time ago, his close friends in the music
business formed a very well-known band, The
Kottonmouth Kings. Their second CD will soon be
released. The very talented DJ of the band, Bobby
Adams, AKA Bobby-B, has created a musical CD
entitled "99 Rips and Beyond,"
and has dedicated it to Rob's memory.
This
CD not only illustrates his talent but is also
very inspirational. It touches the imagination in
much the same way as Rob's accomplishments did.
