Sen Dog
Sen Dog was born Senen Reyes on November 20, 1965 in Cuba. He would soon
be moved to Los Angeles, California. While he was all too familiar with
gang activity, Sen Dog mainly steered clear of it keeping busy playing
football, where he was an All City football player. He also had a ken
interest in music.
B-Real and Sen Dog met DJ Muggs through mutual friend DJ Julio G. At the
time, Muggs was new to the LA area, having just recently moved from
Queens, NY where he grew up around hip-hop culture which he later used in
LA to become a popular DJ on the KDAY am hip-hop station.
DJ Muggs, Sen Dog, and Mellow Man Ace all tried to convince B-Real to
give up gang banging and selling drugs to start a rap group, but B-Real
would have none of it, convinced he was making money the easy way. That
all came to an end when B-Real was shot in the back, and the bullet
pierced his lung. Sen Dog and DJ Muggs were among the people who visited
him in the hospital. Once he was better, Sen and Muggs were able to get
him to join the group.
Cypress Hill formed in 1986, when Sen Dog and his brother Mellow Man Ace
started a group with B-Real and DJ Muggs. Back then, they were known as
DVX and they began their own type of music, using Latin and Hip-Hop
slang. In 1988, Mellow Man Ace left the group, and they renamed
themselves Cypress Hill, which was a local street in LA that Sen Dog once
lived on. The group would be based on the everyday experiences of life
on Cypress Avenue. With this formula, they created a new type of
hip-hop, often mixing Latin music with Mexican-American street culture.
They continued to play local shows until they were signed to
Ruffhouse/Columbia records in 1991.
In 1991, "Cypress Hill" was recorded and released, and it quickly went
double platinum. On the "Check Your Head Tour" with the Beastie Boys,
Cypress Hill met Eric Bobo. Cypress Hill's first smash hit "Insane in
the Brian" made them an instant MTV sensation, and they were a big hit
among hard rock and hardcore rap fans alike, making them one of the first
highly successfull rap/rock bands.
In 1994, Eric Bobo had become a full member of Cypress Hill, and recorded
the album III (Temple of Boom) with the group. In 1995 the album was
released, and it went almost immediately platinum, but all the pressures
were too much, and Sen Dog left the group.
Sen felt he wasn't getting to do his own thing enough, so he started his
own rock group, SX-10.
In 1997, Sen Dog returned to the group for the album "IV", and all
chemistry returned and Cypress Hill also released "Skull and Bones" which
spurred the smash hits "Rock Superstar" and "Rap Superstar" which further
blurred the lines between rap and rock for this pioneering band.
Currently, Sen Dog is playing shows here and there with SX-10, while they
prepare their next studio album.
