Course Description
Cosmetology I is a two-year program providing students with the skills and knowledge required to pass the Texas Cosmetology Commission Exam for licensing. Course content includes sterilization and sanitation processes, shampooing and rinsing hair, application of conditioning creams and color rinses, application of scalp and hair treatments, shaping and thinning hair, hair styling, permanent waving, hair coloring, manicuring, facial massage, facial make-up, removing superfluous hair from the body, and servicing a wig or artificial hairpiece. In addition, students cover business ownership, safety, leadership, and career opportunities.
Cosmetology II students will take the state board test. Students who have successfully completed the two-year course (including graduation) and passed the licensing test are eligible to return to the Career Center for more training to become an instructor.
Student Qualifications
Cosmetology I
Student must satisfy credits for junior standing, but not fulfill requirements
before completing 12th grade.
Program is not open for 12th graders, who have not been involved in Cosmetology
Student must be willing and able to attend after school sessions in order to fulfill required hour
Cosmetology II
Student must have completed at least 550 clock hours prior to the continuing of schoo
Student must complete 1,000 hours and take the state board exam before graduatio
Class Requirements
Registration:  All items must be met before the student is allowed to continue
in course.  A registration form
is required by the Texas Cosmetology Commission
Student must have a $25.00 money order payable to T.C.C. for permit and exam fee.
Student must have a personal picture to display on permit
Student must have valid social security card
Hours
Juniors must complete 550 hours before beginning of senior year
Seniors must complete
1,000 hours and be eligible for graduation before taking the state board exa
Supplies
Student must purchase a uniform specified by instructor and is in compliance with TCC standards ($20.00)
Student must have suitable shoes for lab work (tennis shoes OK). No open-toe shoes.
Student must purchase a kit in the beginning of the second semester of Cosmetology I ($85.00). Lost supplies must be replaced.
Student may purchase personal supplies through the department at prices below retail
Classwork
Student must have one combination lock
Student will provide her own notebook (3 ring binder) with paper and dividers
Student will bring pencils, pens, and any other supplies to class each day
Student is required to keep a notebook throughout the junior and senior year. It will contain printed handouts, class notes, and task sheets, tests and corrections.
If a junior has not completed
550 clock hours by the beginning of the senior year,
he/she will be dropped from the course.
Youth Leadership Organization
Students in this course are encouraged to become members of Skills USA/VICA. Participation in Skills USA/VICA gives each student the opportunity to develop leadership skills and emphasizes high ethical standards of workmanship, lifelong education and pride in the dignity of work.
