Course Description
Culinary Arts is a pre-employment laboratory course designed to provide job specific training for entry-level employment in the culinary field. Instruction includes storage, preparation, and serving of fruits, vegetables, salads, soups, sauces, gravies, appetizers, desserts, pastries, breads, cakes, cookies, pies, puddings, pastas, cheeses, meats, poultry, and fish. The course also includes fundamentals of hygiene, proper storage and use of cooking utensils, tools, equipment, dishes, and entrepreneurship, leadership training, and career opportunities. Certification as a cook is offered.
Students are encouraged to join Skills USA/VICA and continue with leadership training and professional activities.
Student Qualifications
Culinary Arts I
Student must have a desire and dedication to learn cooking skills.
Student must be willing to work for long periods while standing
Culinary Arts II
Student must have successfully completed Culinary Arts I.
Student must have recommendation of the instructor
Student must be willing to do on the job training/internship in second semester
Class Requirements
Culinary Arts I/II
Student will maintain a notebook throughout the year
Student must wear uniform and hair covering during lab or catering assignments
Student must pass safety test with a grade of 100 before continuing with the cours
Student must wear appropriate shoes
