My father George Robertson Spurgeon met my mother Alice Pauline Hawkinswhile they were going to Bolivar High School in Bolivar Missouri. He wentinto the Airforce towards the end of World War II. He was a tail gunnerin a B-52 Airplane. My mother went to beauty college in HarringtonKansas. They were married in December 20, 1946 in Junction City Kanas. After the war they
had a farm. They had hundreds of chickens, turkeys cows ect. In fact thefarm house they later discovered was built by my mothers gr. gr.granfather Robert Newton Hawkins as they found a plaque on the back ofthe house. Any way after the war the bottom fell out of the turkeybussiness and they moved to Milwalkee Wisconsin so dad could work atBycyrus Erie, they made heavy equipment for building roads ect. Here helearned how to read blueprints and inspect parts. Here was where mybrother chuck was born.
They went back to Whicita Kansas for awhile and dadworked at Boeing Airplane Plant and at Ceasna Airplane plant. They builtthe little white house in Cheney Kansas and I was born in Whicita Kansason September 02,1955. The house was a nice little house. I remember ithad wood floors. I had a white cat named Honey. She had one blue eye andone green. She had kittens in the kitchen. My brothers were alwaysclimbing the water tower across the street and getting in trouble. It hada cellar where everyone would go when there was a Tornado.
We moved to Albuquerque New Mexico in 1959. Dad went towork at a plant called A. C. F. down on Broadway. He was a inspecter. They made top secret stuff. Nuclear. Dad and uncle Jr. (mom's brother)went hunting alot. Dad loved to hunt deer with a bow and arrow and wasvery good. They ran across some land up by Taos New Mexico and bought it.Jr. later sold his. Dad built a cabin on ours. Now it is on the same landas the Viet Nam Memorial. Which is ironic sense Steve was killed there inthe war. Where the memorial is I remember my brothers and I going Cyotehunting at nite with flashlights! We spent alot of time there as kidstill dad got sick. We all learned how to shoot a bow and guns and fish. One of dads favorite hunting places was Black Lake. Across the highwayand now lays behind Angel Fire Ski Resort. He had a tendency to catch adeer on the run and shoot it in the butt!!! We always had to walk milesand follow the blood trail till we found it. Dad would not waste animals! Then he would section it up and we would pack it back. Steve shot hisfirst little buck up there when he was a young teenager.
I remember walking miles as a little girl about 6 or 7years old. But I didnot want to be left behind. I would get so tired andjust be dragging. But the boys told me if I ever whined or slowed themdown I couldn't go again. So I kept up!!!
My parents bought a few houses in Alb. One on GracelandN.E. and one on Betts N.E. and finally settled in the house at 11006Snowheights N. E.
Honey my cat was run over not to long after we moved there. Later I got acat named Taffey who I had for years and loved to death. When I waslittle we would play hid and seek with each other.
Daddycame down with Melonomia Cancer in Jan of 1963. He had several surgery'sand tried experimental treatments. Nothing worked. But he played baseballand hunted as long as he could. I remember him playing ball with stitchsin his leg.I know he was in pain but played his hardest any way. Heworked for a while with Harold Groves who opened a Archery center. Himand dad made the original Spitfire bows(recurve) and later the compoundbows. The cancer finally won and he died June13,1966. He had been in Newyork trying a new treatment and slipped into a coma. Mom and a friendBill Mc Adamms rented a little Cesena plane and flew up and brought himback to Alb. HE died at Presbyterian Hospital. I was 11 years old. Dadwas no angel he had his falts but I thoght alot of him as any little girldoes of her daddy. He had many friends and there was a long line of carsat the funeral going to Santa Fe where he is buried with Steve in theNational Cemetery. He was a Christian and went to church almost everySunday and so did we! His father Roy died before he did from throatCancer here in Alb. Dorothy died years later
