While Jesse Russell Payne , was yet a small boy his parents and family
migrated from Washington Co. Tennessee and settled on Sentinal Prairie
near Polk, Missouri. At the same time the Wheelocks who were some kinleft Washington Co. Tennessee also and settled near Urbana Missouri.
Joseph C. Payne (Jesse's father) started without any means and became oneof the substancial farmers in polk co., and owned some of the best landin this section. He was a life long Democrat. he was a Quaker, laterbecoming a Baptist. Joseph Payne died 10-11-1858. he was 66 years,6months, and 2 days and was buried on the farm in what is now the payneCemetery. Anna C. Johnson Payne (his Wife) died 04-13-1873 at the age of75 years, 11 months, and 16 days. She was a member of the MethodistEpiscopal church for many years. Jesse Russell Payne the youngest sonstayed at home until his mothers death. he was united in marriage06-14-1874 to Sarah Elizabeth Bewley, daughter of William and Martha Ann(Davis) Bewley.He bought and adjoining farm to his fathers and made thishis home. to the union were born 10 children.
