Robert II (of France), called Robert the Pious (970?-1031), king ofFrance (996-1031), the son of King Hugh Capet, born in Orlans, andeducated at Reims under the French scholar Gerbert, who later became PopeSylvester II. In 996 Robert married, as his second wife, his cousinBertha of Burgundy. Two years later Pope Gregory V excommunicated him andannulled this marriage, which was considered incestuous by the church; in1003 Robert submitted to the pope and married the daughter of the marquisof Provence, Constance of Arles, by whom he had four sons. He recognizedHugh, the eldest of these sons, as his successor. After Hugh's death in1025, the other sons, aided by their mother, revolted; Robert was stillfighting them at the time of his own death. Robert was called The Piousbecause of his humility and charity; he was also esteemed as a soldierand ruler.
Robert II., the Pious, King of France from 996 to 1031, was born inOrleans in 971, died in Melun in 1031, buried at St. Denis, reigned from996 to July 20, 1031. He was a royal composer, chorister, and poet, whomight have ruled Italy but preferred that his palace should be hiscloister, where he lived in the enjoyment of melody and song. Heconducted the matins and vespers in his royal robes. He was a very devoutman. He married in 988 (1) Rosala (Rozela), daughter of King Berengar II.of Italy, but this marriage was repudiated in 992, married in 997 (2)Bertha of Bourgogne, daughter of Conrad of Burgundy, who died after 1017,also divorced in 1003/5; and (3) Constance Berengar (Berenger) of Artes,born circa 987, died in Melun in 1032 buired at St. Denis, daughter ofWilliam Berengar II (Berenger), Count of Provence, by his 2nd marriage.
Hugh Capet (circa 938-96), king of France, and founder of the Capetiandynasty, son of Hugh the Great, count of Paris, whom he succeeded in 956.His lordship over many fiefs around Paris and Orlans made him thevirtual ruler of France, and when King Louis V of France, the last of theCarolingian line, died without an heir in 987, Hugh's numerous vassalsenabled him to win the election to the throne, defeating the Carolingiancandidate, Charles, duke of Lorraine. Charles and many other great noblesof the realm attempted to resist his authority but, through force of armsand by judicious purchasing of allegiance, as well as through the supportof the church, of which he was a devout member, Hugh established ameasure of order within his kingdom. He had his son, Robert the Pious(later Robert II), elected and crowned his associate and successor in988, thereby confirming the house of Capet, which ruled France until1328. See also Capet.

In 987, on the death of Louis V, the last of the Carolingian kingsof France, Hugh Capet, duke of France and count of Paris, was electedking by the nobility and the clergy. The feudal domain of the Capetfamily was Īle de France, the area around Paris. The Capetian kingsgreatly strengthened the royal power in France by insisting on theprinciples of heredity, primogeniture, and indivisibility of crown lands.Shortly after Hugh became king, he had his son Robert crowned as RobertII (known as the Pious). Hugh appointed Robert his associate, and thispractice of the father having his eldest son rule with him was followeduntil the late 12th century. The greatest of the Capetian kings werePhilip II Augustus, Louis IX (St. Louis), and Philip IV. The dynastysecured direct overlordship of almost all France by the process ofincorporating additional fiefs, large and small, with their ownterritories. In 1328, when Charles IV died without male heirs, theCapetians were succeeded by the Valois, a younger branch of the family,which ruled France until 1589.
