TAMPA -- Midway through the 1998 fall soccer season, not much has changed since last year. Seminole Presbyterian is still the team to beat in Tampa, but no one comes close to matching the firepower of state powers Lakeland Christian or Bradenton St. Stephen's.

In its first game this year, the Lancers played top-ranked Lakeland Christian to a 2-2 tie at halftime, but fell apart in the second half to lose 9-2. According to coach Ian Mattice, the Lancers have improved a lot since then.

""I'm not sure how team stacks up compared with last year, but we've progressed significantly since our first game,'' he said. ""We've gotten into game shape. We have better touches on the ball, and the team unity is starting to gel.''

The 10th-ranked Lancers (8-2) face Tampa Prep (3-4-2) in Pepin Rood Stadium Saturday at 7. Seminole Presbyterian won an earlier match with the Terrapins 2-1.

The Terps have done a decent job on defense with Danny Wendlek in the goal and sweeper Tim McCormick. According to coach Jose DaCosta, the pair are "hard workers and team players."

Tampa Baptist, although 3-6-1 overall, has a 1-1-1 district record and could be a dark horse. Several key district matches in the next two weeks will decide the seedings for post-season play. Bayshore (0-6) is still seeking its first win.
