Heather well represented in playoffs

TAMPA (2/15/99) -- There will be two sets of two Tampa Bay Heather Under-19 players squaring off on Tuesday night in high school regional competition.

First, Pam Mattheus of Durant will meet up with Stephanie Freeman of Countryside in the Class 5A, South I Regional at Countryside.

Also, Katie Calvin of Clearwater Central Catholic and Stephanie Keating of Vero Beach St. Andrews will meet in the Class 3A, South I Regional at CCC.

Another Heather player, Lindsey Hawkins of St. Petersburg High, finished with 46 goals this season. The Green Devils' season ended with a 5-1 loss to Largo in the regional quarterfinals.

Heather forward Cindy Schofield ended her record-breaking year at Lakeland George Jenkins with 48 goals. See more about Cindy here.

Other Heather players still in action in the state playoffs include Ginger Lynn and Martel Warhola of Tampa Catholic in Class 3A and Danielle Rust of Naples (a University of Florida signee) in Class 6A, and Lisa Nowoslawski of Melbourne Central Catholic in 3A.

With a couple of college players returning to the Heather this spring, the team should make another strong run at the National Championships at Disney World this year. Florida State Cup play starts May 22.

Cindy Schofield, Co-Captain of the Tampa Bay Heather U-19 reigning Florida State Youth Soccer Association State Champions shattered the Florida High School Athletic Association career goals scored record with her 231st goal for George Jenkins High School in a soccer game against arch rival Lake Gibson High on January 25, 1999.

She added two more goals for the night in a 4-4 tie game. Schofield took a page from her Heather coach, Danielle Fotopoulos’ book of awesome goals by driving a free kick from outside the right side of the penalty area into the far upper ninety corner of the goal just 11 minutes and 17 seconds into the match.

Ironically, the record of 228 goals was set in 1994 by Robin Confer, a member of the Heather’s 1994 and 1995 National Championship teams. Confer’s record was broken in 1997 by Andi Sellers’ 230 goals. Sellers is presently one of Schofield’s teammates on the Heather. Both Confer at UNC and Sellers at the University of Florida have gone on to NCAA Championship teams. Confer has also played on the U.S. National Team. Coach Fotopoulos is a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team currently training for the 1999 World Cup. This past season, Fotopoulos set an all time NCAA career goal scoring record with 118 goals while leading the Florida Gators to the NCAA Championship.

Schofield is considering college offers from the University of Connecticut, Auburn, Florida State and Loyola Baltimore.

Schofield has completed her high school career, setting the FHSAA career goals mark at 238. The 238 goals scored record places her second on the national list for career high school goals scored. Erin Martin of Temple City, Calif. scored 286 in 1991 to top the list.
