Riverview upsets Durant; All 4A-7 boys teams advance

TAMPA The King Kiwanis Soccer Tournament continued on Monday with a number of exciting quarterfinal matches.
After losing 5-1 to Durant a week ago, the Riverview girls got revenge in a big way, upsetting in the Cougars 3-2 in a penalty kick shootout.
Sonya Bradley scored the game-winner, beating Durants 6-feet-2 goalie Jackie Hinton on a low, hard shot in the corner.
The win came after Riverview lost midfielder Kim Ansell in a collision with a Durant defender. Ansell was taken away in an ambulance with an apparent dislocated hip.
After a 40-minute delay, the game resumed, but regulation expired immediately, setting up the shootout.
"The girls won it for Kim, Sharks coach Paul Mastiella said. "Tonight, it was all heart.
In other action, Bloomingdale got a goal and an assist from Ashley Quaid to oust Tampa Catholic 2-0, and East Bay knocked out host King for the second consecutive year 1-0 on the lone goal by Lisa Verbosky. Gaither was also a 5-2 winner over Chamberlain.
The boys bracket looks like a preview of the Class 4A, District 7 playoffs. All four teams from the districtBloomingdale, Durant, Gaither, and Sickles advanced to the semifinals.
Bloomingdale got four goals from Mario Lara in a 6-2 win over Hillsborough. Gaither took advantage of some defensive miscues by King to win 3-1. Dane Fernandez scored twice for the Cowboys.
Sickles had a tough time against a physical Plant City defense, but Brandon Streichers free kick into the upper corner with 10 minutes to play proved the game-winner. Durant also topped Brandon 3-1.
