DURANT – It’s like 1998 all over again. In a replay of last year’s regional action, Durant shut out Port Charlotte 4-0 in Tuesday’s Class 5A, South I quarterfinal to set up a showdown with Countryside in next Tuesday’s semifinal.

Durant (19-1-2) kept constant pressure on the Pirates (12-8-2) with a steady attack and waves of fresh substitutes off the bench. Kellie Evans struck first in the 10th minute with a header off Pam Mattheus’ corner kick.

Mattheus followed up on a bobbled save by Port Charlotte keeper Kristen Long to make it 2-0 at intermission. Mandy Schumacher notched a pair of spectacular goals on assists by Khara Maddix and Molly Bowers in the second half. It might have been worse except for the stellar play of Pirate sweeper
Latoya Riley.

The Cougars demolished Port Charlotte 6-0 in last year’s quarterfinals only to run into a 5-0 shellacking at the hands of Countryside in the semifinals.

“”We want revenge against Countryside,’’ Maddix said. “”We’re a better team this year. From here on out, we know we have the skill. We just have to put the desire into it.’’
