ST. ED'S SHUT OUT IN SOCCER FOR FIRST TIME EVER
STUART - St. Edward's was shut out in soccer for the first time in the seven-year history of the program Monday when Stuart-St. Michael's defeated the Pirates 2-0. St. Ed's had scored at least once in all 83 previous matches since the inception of the team.
The loss also ended a 24-game unbeaten streak for the Pirates, who fell to 8-1-1 this season heading into a home game at 4 p.m. Thursday with Fort Pierce-St. Anastasia.
Brian Stoff scored twice for St. Michael's before the game was 12 minutes old. The Pirates controlled play from there, outshooting their opponents 5-0 in the second half, but couldn't break through.
SR EDGES GIFFORD SOCCER TEAM IN OT
Juvenal Luna scored his second goal of the game in overtime Tuesday to give Sebastian River a 2-1 victory over Gifford in the Treasure Coast Conference soccer tournament semifinals.
Luna connected on a direct kick from 35-40 yards away five minutes into overtime.
Luna also scored the first goal of the day off a corner kick from Jason Cascio.
Gifford's Josh Stoeckel tied the game in the second half.
Sebastian River's Nathan Folkening recorded eight saves. Salvador Amezquita took over as goalkeeper after Folkening injured his head late in the second half.
Sebastian River (13-2) will play either Stuart or Okeechobee-Yearling in the championship game Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The final will take place at either Sebastian River or Stuart, depending on the Cowboys' opponent.
Gifford ended its season with a 7-2-2 record.
