CASEY STUMP

VALRICO - Bloomingdale's Casey Stump leaped into the air at an attempt to head a ball inside the penalty area. Only it wasn't his own box.

Stump, an All-State sweeper, was moved up to offense against Plant City on Dec. 4 due to an injury to forward Paul Sanders.

He quickly asserted himself by giving the Bulls a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals. His night looked to be over when he collided in the air with Plant City keeper Blake Baldwin. After receiving a cut on his forehead and chin, Stump returned with 10 minutes left in the first half to finish the half with a hat trick.

He wasn't done. In the game's final eight minutes, Stump scored twice more to finish with a school-record five in one game. The performance not only showed Stump's versatility, but his blue-collar work ethic and determination.

``Yeah, I guess that game really described what I am all about. Coming back from that collision is a good description,'' Stump said.

``I was hoping I would get lucky enough to just score one goal.''

Next year Stump will be at the University of South Florida, where he is expected to see some playing time as a freshman - probably at more than one position. ``That is what a soccer player should be if they want to move on to the next level,'' Bloomingdale coach Dave Tennian said. ``You have to do what the coach wants you to do. Casey can do that and more.''
