CINDY SCHOFIELD
LAKELAND - On March 2, Jenkins' Cindy Schofield, the 1999 Tampa Tribune Girl's Soccer Player of the Year, received the shock of her life.
At the annual girls soccer banquet coach Matt Ruby, handing out awards, finished giving Schofield her captains' award when Ruby told her to stay put. Ruby then talked about Schofield's accomplishments during her four-year career at Jenkins, including becoming a two-time state record holder.
Then it happened, in front of the administration, coaches and families, Ruby announced Jenkins was retiring her No. 11. Schofield was dumbfounded; she said she never expected it or saw it coming. ``Matt was talking and then he said, `In recognition of all you have accomplished we are going to retire your jersey,' '' Schofield said.
``They had it mounted in a huge shadow box, and it was awesome.''
Schofield rewrote the FHSAA record book this season when she scored 238 career goals, surpassing the 230 by Andi Sellers of Satellite Beach. In the 1995-96 season, Schofield also set a record for most goals by a freshman with 70.
As her high school career came to an end, Schofield became the No. 2 all-time scoring leader in the nation behind Erin Martin (286) of Temple City, Calif. Schofield verbally committed to Florida State in February and will seal her commitment when she signs a letter of intent Tuesday at Jenkins.
