Temple B'nai Israel
Who are we?
Temple B'nai Israel is one of the oldest active Jewish congregations in New Jersey. It was founded in 1907 by a group of Jewish families who came from Russia and Poland at the turn of the century. Since then, TBI has preserved its family spirit.
TBI is an open and caring community. Our congregation welcomes everybody, from all backgrounds and political and religious perspectives. Each member brings unique talents and skills to the community in its sacred task of building a future. Members choose a level of participation in which they feel comfortable.
TBI celebrates Jewish holidays and Shabbat services with meaning and relevance. We celebrate Shacharit Shabbat every Saturday (followed by a breakfast and an adult education session) and Kabalat Shabbat every first Friday of the month. We integrate tradition with innovation. While we use the conservative Siddur, we enrich our services with contemporary Jewish American readings.
Democracy and equality are reflected in all aspects of synagogue life. Members take on a cooperative responsibility and are encouraged to take an active role in services. We share our faith and doubts and we ask questions and are constantly learning from one another.
Our building
As members of Temple B'nai Israel we not only take pride in our little community but also draw pride from our building. The building in which our synagogue is located is an historical landmark. Originally built in 1800, it has been the residence for the senator Garret Dorset Wall (1783-1850), and the McNeal family, related to the first automobile industry.
