I removed intake runner#1 and studied it to see how I could replace the CIS injector with an EFI injector. The following is a photo of the intake runner: |

The following shows where the original injector goes. You can see the that there is some sort of insert that holds the CIS injector in place. |

I removed this plastic bushing by grinding away the three spots in the aluminum just above the bushing. Here is a picture of this bushing:

I went to the to the scrap yard and picked up an intake with all the fuel rails and throttle body from a 3.1L V6 GM Corsica. The injectors are the Rochester type, part# 7151 17084888. The bushing did not just fit in the existing hole (surprise, surprise). The hole was too big with the old bushing removed. Since I have a lathe I made an "adaptor" bushing. The following pictures show this adaptor bushing:

The "O" ring on the injector fit nice and snug on the bushing and the bushing fit into the runner. A small hole was drilled into the runner and threads for a set screw were tapped. This kept the bushing from poping out. Here is a photo of the new bushing in the runner:

I now needed to test the spraying of the injector. I took a 2L soda bottle and filled it 1/4 with water. I installed a silicon hose on the bottle and ran it to the intake of the injector. I pumped up the bottle with about 50psi of air with my compressor. Then I applied 12v on the injector and the water was forced out of the injector. Here is the setup:

The following is a picture of the injector spraying water. Most of the water is being sprayed out of the runner. Almost no water is hitting the side walls of the runner.

I repeated this with the other five injectors. I found that three injectors don't have a nice clean jets of spray. The jets seem to hit the side of the injector outlet causing it to drip. I tried cleaning them with carb cleaner but the spray jets are not as good as the other three. I will let them soak overnight in the carb cleaner to see if that helps. I might have to pick up some more injectors. |
