I had fun assembling the illustration that accompanies this article.

To start, TVhistory.TV provided the above ad from the era of Mad Men.  The man is holding one of those newfangled wireless remote controls.

I imagined the couple as retirees in 2008.  Therefore, I gave "Leonard" gray hair, while replacing the TV picture with a frame from a 2008 Pirates telecast from Turner Field, showing the Southwest Airlines logo.

I stretched the living room wall to the left and superimposed an actual can of soup that I bought this week, photographed in my home studio (i.e., the top of my desk).

Some retouching was necessary to get the soup the right shade of green and to defocus and de-contrast the living room scene.

The finished illustration led me to revise the monologue.  In my first draft, the woman uses words like "sure" and "guy," but in the picture she seems a bit more refined than my original conception.  She looks like Angela Lansbury curled up there next to her "Leonard" in his dinner jacket.  Therfore, I changed the words to "certainly" and "man."
