Attaching a file to an email
Before you can attach a file to an email, you have to have saved it first. Pay close attention to where you save your file because you will have to navigate to this location from your email program.
To save a file to a floppy disk and then attach it to an email letter-
- Complete your assignment and click on File/Save
- In the Save As dialog box that appears, make sure the "Save In" box says 3.5 floppy (A). If you do not see this, click on the down arrow to locate your floppy disk. (I am assuming your file is saved on a floppy. If it is saved on your harddrive/harddisk, navigate to this location)
- Name your file a descriptive name that will describe what you are saving (ex. assign#3)
- Your software program will add an extension after the filename. For example, if you are using NOTEPAD to save this file the extension .txt will be added automatically to the end of your file name so the complete file name will then be assign#3.txt (Notepad will automatically add the .txt. You do not have to do this. Later on when we start using NOTEPAD to write our HTML code, we will have to add our own .html extension to prevent NOTEPAD from adding the .txt extension) If that information about extensions confuses you, we'll cover it more later. Also, if you don't ever see the .txt extension, don't worry about it. It doesn't always show but it's still there.
- Open up your email software & log on
- Different email programs handle attachments differently, so I can't provide a step-by-step for each of you but they are similiar so these instructions should help you figure it out if you have never attached a file before.
- Look for the word ATTACH or a paperclip icon in the tool bar and click it. (In Yahoo, you have to scroll down to the bottom of your window to find "Add/Delete attachments"
- After clicking on attach, a box will appear asking you what you want to attach. You will have to BROWSE to the location of your saved file.
- At the top of this window, click on the down arrow in the "Look in" box and navigate to 3.5" floppy disk (or where ever you saved your file if it is not on your floppy disk) You may have to click on the down arrow to see 3.5" floppy.
- You should now see a list of all of the files that are saved on your floppy disk. Select the name of the file that you want to attach to your email by double clicking on the filename.
- For some email programs, that is all you have to do. In others, there might be another button you have to click on that says attach or Done or OK.
- You should now be back to where you were composing an email to me. Type my address in the To: line and a descriptive SUBJECT: line so I will know what this email is.
- You should see the name of your attached file somewhere in this window.
- When you click on send, the attached file will go along with the email. It does take longer to send an email that has a file attached.
- I will respond after successfully receiving your attachment.
