MON - 7.5.04 - 12:15 AM
My mom's back home and I've got my computer again. That means more frequent updates, and I'll start uploading more pictures soon. Those of you who were holding your breath, feel free to exhale.
I'll finish my Denver account tomorrow (later today, technically).
Tonight, my dad, mom and I sat in the church parking lot and watched the fireworks at Tinker. At first I tried to take some time for reflection, since it was a nice quiet summer evening with a bright, pretty background. I had trouble zeroing in on something though, and found I couldn't concentrate very well for some reason. So I sat content to just take in my surroundings. The fireworks were pleasant, the weather was exquisite (whoever heard of low 70s in Oklahoma in July?), and the breeze was soothing. I can't think of a better adjective for the evening than "enjoyable."

"I'll finish my Denver account tomorrow (later today, technically)."
-Me, 7.5.04, 12:15 AM
Obviously that's not quite how things worked out. I ended up having to help my dad put up the new fence here at the house, which is surprisingly exhausting work. I've been beat the last couple of days, so that's my excuse.
To be honest, there's not much else to tell about Denver. The wedding was the day following the last one I detailed. It was a nice, small outdoor affair with my mom officiating. We had about a two-hour window of sunny weather the entire time we were there, and it just happened to align with the ceremony. The reception was fun, but since it was mostly family attending, there weren't many young folks who were willing to dance. It ended up being me, my sister, and a few cousins dancing for a couple songs, then we sat down again. I had a good time catching up with everyone at the table, though.
When the time came for the garter toss, I pretty much had to go up since there was like four single guys over the age of 15. I stood at the right end of the group, and even before it was thrown I knew it was coming at me. Partly a feeling, partly a look at the arm angle of the groom. At any rate, I was right, and I ended up with the garter.
We came home straight from there, spending the night somewhere in central Kansas and finishing the trip on Monday. I had a lot of fun seeing all the relatives I hadn't in so long, as well as the lovely mountain scenery and the wonderful Coors Field.
My next big event of the summer will be the Ben Folds and Guster concert in Kansas City on the 17th of this month. Just a week and a half away, and I'm totally stoked. Undoubtedly, the days will slowly drip by.

THU - 7.8.04 - 9:32 PM
It's so nice to have an evening at home where I don't have to do a single thing.
If you're looking to buy CDs on the cheap, check out half.com. I got the Cardigans' "First Band on the Moon" for $3.24 including shipping. Not all the deals are that great, but you can get a lot of releases for under ten bucks. You can buy new or used, but there are even different levels of used, so you can get "like new" condition, "good" condition, etc. Worth a look, at the very least.
On Tuesday, I played my trumpet for the first time since December. It sounded like I hadn't played in about 3 weeks. I don't know if something happened to my lips or what, but I can't believe how good a shape they're in. I'm playing in church on August 29th, and by then, I might be back to peak level.
Another thing I can't believe: how completely awful the Royals are right now. If the roster stays the same the rest of the year, they might honestly win 10 games the entire second half of the season. I know about the half the team right now are placeholders who are just there until injuries clear up, or minor league players become ready for the bigs. But my God. I'm glad I don't have to watch them on TV every night. Because if I could, I would, no matter how ugly it got. I have a disease.

Two posts within three hours? *gasp*
All two of my pictures from Chicago c.1999 are up. I'm working on uploading shots of Coors Field. Should be done tomorrow.
Here's a fun addition. Right now, I have exactly 1,250 items on my Winamp playlist. I'm going through them in order, 1-1250, and each day I'll give a rundown of which bands I heard, and my three favorite songs from the group. Unfortunately, this means that 5RSFMWP! will be on hiatus until this new thing runs its course. I don't want to alarm you, but it could be several weeks.
Today's Streak Through Winamp
Item numbers: 1-31
Bands: 311; A Trillion Barnacle Lapse; A-ha; Abandoned Pools; Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso UFO; Ryan Adams
Three favorites: (1) Ryan Adams - Goodnight, Hollywood Blvd; (2) Ryan Adams - I See Monsters; (3) Ryan Adams - New York, New York
I don't even like Ryan Adams quite that much. Admittedly, this first group is pretty weak.

By the time you read this, Coors Field pics will probably be up. Included is the most recent photographic evidence of your humble host. But I've had a haircut since then.
Today's Streak Through Winamp
Item numbers: 32-52
Bands: Air; Alabama; Herb Alpert; Ambulance Ltd.; ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead; Fiona Apple; Apples In Stereo
Three favorites: (1) Air - Ce Matin La; (2) Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine; (3) Apples In Stereo - Seems So
That's Fiona's new single. One of the things I like about her is the jazzy inflections she's so good at. That, along with the instrumentation as well as the happier mood, make Extraordinary Machine something I could listen to for a good long while. If anyone knows when her new album is due, I'd appreciate the info. I could look it up, of course, but interaction with my readers is one of my favorite parts about running the site.
God, I sound like an idiot columnist. "My readers." Pssh.

Hooray for days that are so uneventful that you don't have to take off your pajamas.
Today's Streak Through Winamp
Item numbers: 53-86
Bands: Aquagen; The Argument; Athlete; Atmosphere; Audioslave; Barenaked Ladies; Basement Jaxx; The Beach Boys
Three favorites: (1) The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice; (2) Atmosphere - Say Ssh; (3) Basement Jaxx - Red Alert
"Say Ssh" is the best rap anthem for the Midwest that I've ever heard. See, the reason that's funny is because it's the only one.

SUN - 7.11.04 - 11:05 PM
Cowboy Bebop is a kickass movie. Mere Christianity is an excellent book. I finished both today. Next up for reading is either Dostoyevsky's "The Idiot" or "Selected Stories" from Andre Dubus.
Today's Streak Through Winamp
Item numbers: 87-109
Bands: The Beatles; Beck
Three favorites: (1) Beck - Sexx Laws; (2) The Beatles - Let It Be; (3) The Beatles - Oh! Darling
The horn part on Sexx Laws is one of the coolest things I've ever heard. It's very hard to try and choose between Beatles songs.
It's funny how things work out sometimes. I had to stretch for three favorites among the first group I did, then I have to pick three out of so many great ones from the Beatles and Beck.

I guess I'm about as official as it gets now.
Yesterday I went to OU to enroll. I got basically all the classes I needed/wanted without any trouble. The earliest one is 10:30 AM, and even that's only two days a week. I have nothing Friday. I'm pretty excited about that. I even got my ID card, which makes me feel more like an actual student. I can't wait for this school year. I'm looking forward to making new friends, maybe getting reacquainted with old ones, and especially getting a fresh start on my coursework.
Today's Streak Through Winamp
Item numbers: 110-241
Bands: Beck; Ludwig Van Beethoven; Belle and Sebastian; Ben Folds Five; Pat Benatar; The Bens; The Beta Band; Better Than Ezra; Beulah; Bjork; The Black Crowes; Black Rebel Motorcycle Club; Blink-182; Blur; Box Car Racer; Boyz II Men; British Sea Power
Five favorites: (1) Ben Folds Five - Selfless, Cold and Composed (Live); (2) Beulah - Gravity's Bringing Us Down; (3) Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata; (4) Ben Folds Five - Rachel (Live); (5) Better Than Ezra - Chain Smoking
Five favorites this time, because there were so many in the group. Most people would probably give me funny looks if they saw how many live Ben Folds Five songs I have. This particular rendition of "Selfless..." has a great sound (vibe, even) that I just love.

WED - 7.21.04 - 12:30 AM
I had a wonderful weekend. The Royals didn't play so well, but it's always a joy to spend an evening (or afternoon, as the case may be) at Kauffman Stadium. And I got a sweet powder blue shirt out of the deal.
The concert was outstanding. Gavin DeGraw opened and was okay. Ben Folds came up next and did not disappoint. He played some older songs this time that I haven't heard live yet. That was a treat. Guster joined him for his last two songs, then finished off the night nicely. For the encore, Folds returned to the stage and played a few more songs with Guster. My personal favorites were the Five's "Fair" and Guster's "All The Way Up To Heaven," both of which had the other act accompanying. All the songs they played together were simply amazing. I hope to find a recording, but I can't imagine it will do justice to the real thing. I got to meet some cool Ben fans too, which made everything all the more worthwhile.
The last two weeks or so have actually moved by pretty fast. I suppose that's a relief. Before I know it, we'll have come back from New York and I'll be in Norman again.
As it turns out, my playlist has undergone unavoidable changes, so now I'll just leave off the item numbers during each day's streak. So to wrap up an already extensive entry, here it is.
Today's Streak Through Winamp
Bands: Britta Phillips and Dean Wareham; Dave Brubeck; Jeff Buckley; The Buggles; Built to Spill; Steve Burns; Butthole Surfers; Cake; The Canadian Brass; The Cardigans; Drew Carey; Rodney Carrington; The Cars

I found out today that I'm eligible for a class-action settlement from PayPal. I'm not even quite sure what they did, but something with lax security and poor communication with users. Didn't seem like a big deal to me. Anyway, I don't think I'm going to put in a claim. For one thing, I'd probably be lucky to get $10 out of the deal since anyone who signed up for an account between 1999-2004 is eligible, and the money is split evenly out of a million. Secondly, I wasn't affected by any of PayPal's actions or lack thereof, so I don't feel it necessary that they compensate me for something that "could have" happened. If you have valid reasons why I should go for it though, you can play steak and let me know.
I'll include how many songs I have of each artist in the Winamp streak from here on. A large number sometimes indicates that I'm just a big fan, but more often means I'm exploring them and giving myself a lot of material to peruse.

I can't remember if I've talked about it here or not, but everybody should see the movie Garden State as soon as they can. Okay. A quick run-down of what I saw/did in New York:
Times Square (every day, actually)
Rockefeller Center (several times)
Central Park
Yankee Stadium
Museum of Modern Art
Some neighborhoods in Brooklyn
Grand Central Station
Chrysler Building
Empire State Building (and observation deck)
WTC site
Wall Street
Ferry to Liberty Island and Statue of the same name
Dave Letterman taping
The movie Garden State
Lincoln Center
Carnegie Hall
I think that's everything...if I forgot anything, I'll add it later. I think the thing that struck me most was the sheer number of people on this ten-mile-long island. I lived in LA for 9 months and never saw anything like it. Times Square is a sight to behold...it is America, for better or for worse. The overabundance of advertising can be borderline disgusting, but it's a really cool place all the same.
We stayed at a Hilton that was about four blocks from Rockefeller, six blocks from Central Park, and within ten blocks of Times Square. Needless to say, we walked a LOT. But with nice weather and the excitement of all this new stuff, it really wasn't so bad.
I don't want to write for pages and pages, so I'll wrap things up quickly. I absolutely loved the city, but I was glad to come home after a week, if that makes sense. I hope I get the opportunity to go back sometime in the near future.
By the way, Garden State is AWESOME. It's opening in new cities over the next few weeks, so if it comes to your area, it is a must-see.
I'm in Norman once more; got moved in over the weekend. Classes start the 23rd. I may regret this later, but I'm ready for school to get going. I'll enjoy the week and a half of nothing, though.

I got my pictures from NYC back today, and am quite pleased with the result. Someday I'll get them scanned.
Ben Folds is coming to OU on October 1. That'll be four shows in thirteen months for me. I wish he would play somewhere fairly small though. I've seen him at OSU's football stadium, Tulsa's basketball arena, and a crowded outdoor market, and this one will be at Lloyd Noble. A club show would be nice sometime.

MON - 8.16.04 - 3:45 PM
Yesterday I was driving from Norman to Midwest City to help move Courtney up to Tulsa. It was about 1:30 or so and pouring rain. I was in light traffic on I-35 at the semi-rural southern end of Moore when I decided to move to the middle lane. I could feel some patches of water under me, but they seemed to pass quickly.
A few seconds after I straightened out I hit some more patches. The car swerved ever so slightly, and as I was getting it back in line, I hit more water and suddenly I was spinning. Just as the skid started, I hit the brake and something in my brain went "Uh oh." At that point I had something like a moment of Zen. My foot stayed on the brake; I stared straight ahead nonchalantly, holding my hands at ten and two on the wheel, as Sondre Lerche played softly in the background. Several things flashed through my mind, and I will try and recount them here.
The first thing I remember after losing control was the concrete separation barrier going by my passenger side window. For half a second, I was staring back at the road I had just come up, and it appeared that no cars were in danger of hitting me (however, this thought did not register in my mind at the time). I remembered that I was supposed to turn my wheel in some direction to stop the skid, but I wasn't sure which way, and I feared that such a move might turn me into traffic. Sometime before I spun off the side of the road, I wondered "Is this how it ends?"
Next thing I knew, I was skidding over grass instead of concrete. I figured there were only a few things that could stop me: the natural cycle of the skid, rolling over, or going through the barbed-wire fence and hitting something on the service road. A few seconds after this last thought, I came to a stop.
All these things had fired through my brain in fractions of a second, and the entire time, I kept the same expression with my foot on the brake.
The natural cycle had won out just a foot or two short of the fence. I don't remember if it stopped sharply or glided into place. The car was once more facing north. I didn't occur to me to count how many times I spun around, so I couldn't tell you. I would guess twice, but it could have been three. I glanced back at the road as I turned off the car and saw shreds of tire on the shoulder. I stepped into the still driving rain and sloshed my way around to inspect the tires and the car itself. Everything seemed in its normal condition, other than the blades of grass covering the driver's side of the car. I got back in and just sat for a few minutes. I was shaking slightly, and it was then I realized how strange I felt during the moment, almost as if it weren't actually happening. A truck stopped on the service road to make sure I was all right. I was; not only was the car unharmed, but if I had been jostled around during the skid, I showed and felt no signs. As I slowly drove the half mile to the nearest exit, I had to go around three other cars on the shoulder. So, um, FYI: accidents are more likely in rainy conditions. Drive accordingly.
I swear to Iesha, when I turned the CD player back on, the first line that came on went, "the times when you appreciate that you survived." You can't make this stuff up.
At any rate, I'm just fine and a little wiser. We got Courtney moved into her dorm at the University of Tulsa and time continues marching onward.
It's a nice day.

I've decided where my loyalties lie in this year's American League pennant races/playoffs. In no particular order...
I WILL root for:
Boston
Minnesota
Cleveland
Texas
Anaheim
I will NOT root for:
New York
Chicago
Oakland
I guess if it came down to it, I'd most like to see Minnesota or Texas win the pennant. I wouldn't be disappointed with Boston, though. There's not anybody in the National League I really dislike. Atlanta, St. Louis, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Diego, San Francisco...I'm cool with all of them.
Today I added the first Beatles album to my collection. I traded in a few of my old crappy CDs and got, among a few things, Abbey Road. I've spun it once, and see many more spins in the future.
I saw Isaiah last night for the first time in over a year. We had a good visit, in several different locales.
One last thing: Garden State opens in OKC on Friday, so if you've got the time and money, go and see it. It will be playing at the Quail Springs AMC.

I've got a lot of stuff to do before school starts on Monday. Books, insurance, meal plan, etc...man am I ready to get going.
I don't know what is causing this mild, wet weather in August but I think I'd like to take it to dinner.
I've scanned a picture from New York. Just one though (I'm using it as my desktop for now). It's of Yankee Stadium, and it might give you vertigo.
Voila!
I finished "The Idiot" by Dostoevsky last night. I'll have to read it again, but probably won't have the time I need for it until next summer. It's very complex and a difficult read, but obviously very well-crafted. I don't really have much other commentary right now.

My career at OU has begun. Can't say it got off to an exciting start; I had one class, at 3 PM, and we just went over the syllabus for about 45 minutes. I'm glad to be here though, and I may write more on that later.
Friday night, I saw Garden State again. After the first time, I thought "Wow, that was a good movie." This time, I felt good all over for the rest of the night. I'm going to do what I can to take everyone I know to see this movie.
In the last week, I've been "reunited" with two friends who I haven't seen in a long time. It's been over a year for one, and over two years for the other. I can't describe how good it feels to have them around again.
I guess you could say my life's going really well right now. I'm still waiting for it to pick up a little, but I'm pretty happy for the moment.

TUE - 8.24.04 - 8:34 PM
As I'm sure you've noticed by now, I've done a little color inversion with the site. I decided it was time to change things up a bit. I also added one of my pictures of the Statue of Liberty from a few weeks ago, and made the physical area a little smaller. I'm done with Buzzing About... and Scrub Up, but you can find those archives in Extras. I'd love to hear any feedback about the changes, positive or negative.
Today was my first "full" day of classes, but it was about as boring as yesterday. I did see Jimmy and Kissick while I was getting lunch and hung out with them for a bit in the engineers' lounge (a real slick place, incidentally). The only thing I can complain about my first two days is that it's been so hot. I realize that it's usually about ten degrees hotter this time of year, but it's been such a mild summer that 93 seems really oppressive.
When I got home this afternoon, Ben Folds' new EP Super D had arrived in the mail. Right now I'm kind of mixed on it. There's a couple songs I like a lot and a couple I'm not real crazy about. But overall I think I'll end up liking it, and anything new from Folds is exciting.
I've been watching a lot of the Olympics. It's funny how all these sports I couldn't give a crap about normally are suddenly drawing me in. Whatever the reasons, I really enjoy the Games.
I'll get back on track with the Winamp Streaks this week. I know their absence has been weighing heavily on your mind.

The Darkness rock hard. So does Ben Folds covering The Darkness. I like Super D a whole lot. Adelaide especially; it's definitely his best original song from the EPs.
I've also been digging The Weakerthans pretty hardcore lately. Their album Reconstruction Site has some great stuff on it.
In studio we had our first presentations of the year. We had to get an object that's worth less than $2 whose form displays function, stability, and aesthetics. I bought an interesting vase at a dollar store. So today we sketched and diagrammed them and presented. Not a big deal, but I did really well.
It's still kind of early to get a real good feel for my classes, but none of them seem too bad at this point. I've managed to actually talk to a few people. I think this should be a good semester.

Honestly, if it came down to it, I don't know who I would go for between USC and OU. But they should both have great years, and there's a very good chance that one will win the national title. Today I'll be wearing the SC jersey, though.

Hey, it's September! Whatever that means to you.
I have seen a LOT of people I know at OU. I don't have classes with any of them, but it's nice to be walking down the sidewalk and get to wave at someone and say hi. I really like it here so far. The big university atmosphere is most definitely for me.
I was a little disappointed in the Scrubs premiere tonight. It was really goofy, almost to the point of nausea. The "sentimental" parts were forced. Heather Graham is nice to look at, but doesn't have a whole lot of talent to speak of. Despite all this, I enjoyed parts of the episode, and I'm not too worried about the show. The last two seasons have started slowly as well.
I've scanned several pictures from New York, but still have a huge stack to go. They'll definitely be up by the end of the month, maybe even a couple weeks.
I'm going to stop with the Winamp streaks. I can't imagine that anyone finds them interesting enough to actually read through each time. However, 5RSFMWP! will return to Tuesdays. And though it's Wednesday, you could say it's Tuesday night. Let's go!

In my admittedly limited expereience, I've come to the conclusion that most anything in the mainstream pretty much sucks. So why is it considered career suicide when politicians step outside said mainstream, even a little bit? Is it more respectable to stand firm in your convictions, whatever they may be, then to blindly follow your party? What kind of robot does that anyway?
Just a few questions to ponder this election year, in which I challenge you to find a single savory character among the disappointing cast of dozens.

Incidentally, my last post was not about the RNC, but about a comment that that windbag Zell Miller made before the convention. And it was really more a train of thought rather than a reaction to it.
I saw Garden State for the third time last night. It still rocks my world.
I have a four day weekend. I've spent the first day sleeping in, hanging pictures in my room, and trading in CDs for new ones. Exciting, I know.
I predict that the year 2010 is when we will start saying twenty-whatever instead of two thousand-whatever. Twenty ten flows a lot better than Two thousand ten, and that's the case for all the following years too. So remember, you heard it here first.
Have a good holiday. You'll probably hear from me again before it's over.

Hmm. I didn't get as much accomplished this weekend as I'd hoped, but I got everything I needed to get done, done. I'll take small victories for now.
Yesterday was the one year anniversary of my first concert, and what will probably always be my favorite. I still to this day can't believe that Ben Folds, Better Than Ezra, and Barenaked Ladies played a show together, and in Stillwater, Oklahoma of all places.
This is me getting nostalgic.

Today I ordered tickets for the Ben Folds show in Norman next month. Tomorrow I'm going to my first OU game since I was a sophomore in high school. The day after that I'm playing my horn at First Pres in Norman.
Yesterday I turned in an Arch project and went to bed at 6. The day before that, I stayed up all night working on said project. The day before that, I saw the Manchurian Candidate (pretty good movie) with some friends from high school.
Now you're all caught up.

The Chiefs open up tonight at Denver (ugh). Like every year, I hope they'll win the Super Bowl. But after the disastrous collapse of the defense last year, I have doubts. They'll probably make the playoffs (though that's no given with their monster schedule), but unless the D improves quite a bit, they won't be there for long.
I had a great time at the OU game last night. It was nice to be reminded of all the tradition and respect for the game around here. I think after having USC get trash-talked all last year, I started to kind of resent it and even bring down OU in my mind. But going to the game reminded me of why I was a Sooner fan in the first place. A 63-13 win didn't hurt, either.
I actually didn't play my trumpet at First Pres today, just read a scripture passage. It was University Sunday so the college group ran the service. I offered to play a piece if they needed it, but they found someone else who was probably more willing than I.
Ha. Raiders lost.
[Let's Play Steak]
MON - 9.13.04 - 10:12 PM
Not much to report today. I figured the Chiefs would lose last night, but I'm actually encouraged by the way they fought back and stayed in the game. Gunther has said it'll take about four games or so for the defense to click into the new scheme, so until then I'll just hope they can keep people under 30 points (a game at Mile High is excusable). Priest looks AWESOME.
I guess the reason I'm even posting today is this. TerraServer is a website that allows you to view satellite images, and for the longest time, their image of Oklahoma City has been from 1996 or so. I went by yesterday, and they've updated it to a 2002 image. And it's in color! You can also zoom in a lot farther. Check out this picture of the Bricktown Ballpark. Wow! I haven't seen any other cities with color images yet, but it looks like they're expanding their coverage.

Movies I have seen in the last 36 hours:
Collateral
Snatch
Super Size Me
I liked all of them. Collateral was well-written and entertaining. I watched Snatch at three in the morning, so I probably didn't pick up on as much as I should have, but it was a good time to be sure.
Super Size Me will give me the boost I've needed to start eating healthier. I'd been taking baby steps, but I should be improving significantly, and soon. It's not that it grosses you out of fast food (though that's a possibility), but the effects on this guy's health were startling to say the least, and disturbing to put it best.

Not time to panic yet. I won't write them off unless they start 0-4.
College football is treating me nicely, though. At the last minute, I got an invitation to watch OU play Oregon. It was blazing hot (who schedules afternoon games in Oklahoma this early in the year?), but the game was good. USC continues to look awesome.
I'm fast becoming a fan of David Sedaris. I'm reading his book Me Talk Pretty One Day, and it has me in tears occasionally. Here's a passage; at the time he was living in France and taking a class on the language with several international students. Here, he and his classmates are trying to explain Easter to a Muslim. It's in English, literally translated from their French:
The Poles led the charge to the best of their ability. 'It is,' said one, 'a party for the little boy of God who call his self Jesus and...oh, shit.' She faltered and her fellow countryman came to her aid.
'He call his self Jesus and then he die one day on two...morsels of...lumber.'
The rest of the class jumped in, offering bits of information that would have given the pope an aneurysm.
'He die one day and then he go above of my head to live with your father.'
'He weared of himself the long hair and after he die, the first day he come back here for to say hello to the peoples.'
'He nice, the Jesus.'
'He make the good things, and on the Easter we be sad because somebody makes him dead today.'
If that seems underwhelming, it's probably just because I provided poor context. The whole book is great stuff.

New York pictures are finally up! Check out cities, and you'll find them there. I'm very pleased with how they came out, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Or at least close to it. Even if you were LUCKY enough to see the physical prints, I've cropped and edited some of them to look like I originally wanted them to.
The week was pretty successful. I don't have any grades back yet, but I feel pretty good about how everything went.
Last night I went to the State Fair with a few people and had a great time. I only had the chance to ride three rides though, because after that I saw Garden State for the fourth and final time in theaters. It was closing night for the movie in Oklahoma City, so I had to catch it one last time. I'll admit the humor is starting to wear off just slightly, but every time Frou Frou's "Let Go" starts up near the end, I still get chills. Hopefully it won't take long for the DVD to come out.

It gets so friggin' COLD in this house sometimes.
I haven't been able to smell anything in about three weeks. Every night I have to sleep with my mouth open, then in the morning it's all dried out and sometimes there's gunk lining everything.
Music brings happier things. Better Than Ezra is playing a free (!!) show at UCO on October 10th. Hopefully it's not students only. But even if it is, they're playing in Tulsa about two weeks after that.
The Pixies are playing right now and I really like it. I've been meaning to check them out for a while. Also, I've been digging in to the Shins' Oh, Inverted World album. In time, I may love it as much as Chutes Too Narrow, and that's saying quite a bit. New Slang has wonderful lyrics, and The Past and Pending is seriously beautiful.
I have nothing more that is either relevant or true.

Even supporters of the President surely must admit that he doesn't exactly set the world on fire in such scenarios as this evening. As far as the election goes, he has everything to lose in these debates, and is not off to a particularly good start. I thought Kerry did a solid job, but should probably expand the scope of his topics a bit if he wants to attract more votes. Personally, I would like to see some discussion of environmental issues beyond the quick accusations that Bush has ignored global warming.
I really hate that politics is such a dividing line among people. I don't feel comfortable talking about it with friends who think differently, yet the fact that I root for USC is hardly an issue at all in one of the most football-crazy towns anywhere.
I bought an album by The Weakerthans yesterday. Reconstruction Site. I've only listened halfway through it, but I can tell already that I'm going to love it. Rarely do I get so attached to music so quickly. The songs "Reconstruction Site" and "Plea From A Cat Named Virtue" are outstanding, and are even better when played while driving in the rain.

MON - 10.4.04 - 12:19 AM
Well, I was all excited because Ben Folds was playing Norman Friday night and I had friends coming in from out of town and it was just gonna be one of most awesomest nights ever. And then there were techinical difficulties.
We were outside Lloyd Noble when someone told us Ben had cancelled the show. Apparently at his next show, he explained that his soundboard blew out. At any rate, there was no concert to be seen, so Normanites were left pissed off, and travelers were hung out to dry.
I was hosting some friends from Kansas City, so after the news was broken, we ate at Hideaway and went back to my place. We ended up watching TV all night. I really did have a good time, but horror movies that are so bad as to be hilarious are no substitution for Ben Folds. The show will most likely be rescheduled sometime, but the damage has been done.
The weather was just gorgeous on Saturday. I helped park cars for the OU game, and it was in the 50s all morning and an almost clear sky. I am so ready for fall.
The Royals limped to the finish line with a spectacular three-hit performance today, dropping to the Puke Sox 5-0. The final record is 58-104. Darrell May led the team in ERA at 5.61. It really is hard to believe how quickly this season went down the toilet. After Opening Day, it seemed that everything that could go wrong did. Now that the Chiefs are falling all over themselves, the 2006 Royals might be the next pro sports season I actually look forward to. 2005 is not going to be much better.
I've been going on long enough. What a horribly eventful weekend.

Tomorrow (later today, technically) after classes I'm heading to St. Louis to see Ben Folds. Since things in Norman didn't work out, I figured I'd make a road trip on a weekend where I didn't have much in terms of class work. Actually, I'm driving to Manhattan, KS tomorrow to meet with some people, then we'll head to STL on Friday. Should be a good time.
I don't really have much else. I bought the Shatner album and Garden State soundtrack today. I haven't had a chance to get into Shatner yet, but I really dig the first song, which is a cover of Pulp's "Common People."
I'm done till next week. See ya.
[Let's Play Steak]
TUE - 10.12.04 - 11:36 PM
I would be remiss if I didn't talk about this weekend.
Thursday after class, I drove up to Manhattan, KS, and spent the night at a friend's house. Friday morning, we drove to Kansas City, picked up a few people, left a few cars, and drove to St. Louis. At 8:00 in the Rec Center at Saint Louis University, Ben Lee played a 45-minute set, including Cigarettes Will Kill You, which is one of the few songs of his I know (and I like it a lot). I enjoyed it. That was followed by 45 minutes of standing around in the hot, crowded gym, with generally crappy music blasting over the speakers. But then Ben Folds came out and it was all okay.
He played a few songs by himself on the piano, then had his new band come out and play most of the rest of the show. It was really amazing. Ben's solo shows were great, but the band adds a whole other dimension to the music. They seemed to drive each other, and Ben really got into some of the solos. They closed with One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces, which may have been the greatest song I've ever seen performed live.
We hung around after the concert, and talked to the drummer and bassist for a few minutes until Ben came out. He signed stuff, chatted, and took pictures, then everybody went home. Just a great night.
We stayed at my friend's roommate's house in St. Louis that night. We slept in, watched the first half of OU-Texas, then left. I stayed at my aunt and uncle's place in KC on Saturday night, then got back to Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon. It was an absolute mess around OKC, raining pretty hard with water all over the place. Apparently it had been raining for about 24 hours at that point. But I got home safe, which certainly made me happy.
That night, I braved the rain once more and drove to Edmond to see Better Than Ezra. They were playing a free show for UCO's Homecoming. I think it was supposed to be in the football stadium, but it was moved to the field house becasue of the weather. I got there about the time they were supposed to go on, but they were about 30-45 minutes late. I still managed to get a spot about 3 rows back. It was a short show, only 12 songs plus 2 for an encore, but it was rockin'. They played Pull, which was a pleasant surprise. They've got great stage presence. I hung around afterward, but one of the roadies said they had to take a flight straight back to LA because they were mixing their new record. He said March was an optimistic date for release, and that the new stuff is really good.
Mostly for my own benefit, here are the setlists.
I put up pictures from Ben Folds in the Concerts section of Photos. I've got Ezra pics but I'll need some time to get those up. I know you're on the edge of your seat.
Got a couple tests this week. Frankly, I'm not too worried.

If by chance you didn't watch Crossfire today (which I'm guessing is so distinct a possibility as to be a probability), you should definitely check this out. Jon Stewart and Tucker Carlson went after each other, verbally. My favorite line:
Stewart: "How old are you?"
Carlson: "35."
Stewart: "You're 35, and you wear a bow-tie?"
Tomorrow is the float trip with the church. I had a great time last year, and this time the weather should be nicer. I'll be back on Sunday afternoon, then next week I'm splitting my time between here and Midwest City as my parents will be out of town.

The float trip was a good time. However, I did make the mistake of taking my cell phone along, not only on the trip itself, but actually out with me on the river. You've probably already guessed the outcome of the story by now, but my canoe got caught in a current, hit a log going sideways, and got sucked under. Phone fried, disposable camera lost, only pair of warm clothes soaked. We also lost the portable radio with which we had been listening to the OU game (luckily the game was already over at this point). But as I said earlier, it was still a pretty fun weekend overall. I'm getting a new phone tomorrow, so you might send me your number just in case I don't remember it.
How about this ALCS? I didn't see the first three games, but I've watched at least the ending of the last three. Of course, I'd like to see the Yankees lose. And I guess I'd like to see the Red Sox win, too. Those are two distinct statements. I can't wait for Game 7. I feel kinda bad for the Cards and Astros, who are playing a great series as well, but are being overshadowed by the big rivalry. I really don't care who wins that one, as I'm somewhat a fan of both teams.
I've been spending my evenings and nights in Midwest City this week, as I mentioned in my last post. I've been impressed with my ability to wake up early enough to get down to Norman.
I've got a couple other things to discuss, but I fear I've gone on too long already. Good night.
[Let's Play Steak]
SUN - 10.24.04 - 12:07 AM
And get used to the Yankees-Red Sox crap. ESPN worships this rivalry and the ARod stuff, while trivial, will be talked about to no end throughout the season, especially if it's a tight race (which it should be). But hey, if it produces a playoff series like last year's ALCS, I won't mind.
-The Correct Dosage, 4.4.04
I'd say things worked out in that department.
Last week the dog we have here in Norman escaped out the front door, and we have yet to find him. We've got a couple new cats now, but we're still on the lookout for the dog, so if you see a shepherd-rottweiler sort of mutt around town, let us know. His name's Severus, but Lord knows if he'll answer to anything.
I'm doing really well in studio. Right now we're mostly just doing drawings, but I'm getting stuff done and getting A's on just about everything. It's a nice feeling to not only finish the work, but to be praised on its quality, too.
I saw The Forgotten last weekend, and it surpassed my low expectations. The first half is boring, but there's some pretty good stuff as the movie progresses.
Last night, I finally saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind after weeks of waiting for a copy to surface at Blockbuster. My anticipation was probably too high, but it was still a really, really good movie. I'd give it a 93 or 94 (out of 100), but I'd like to see it again in a week or two. Charlie Kauffman is a brilliant screenwriter.

I don't want to be a music snob and I don't want to have feelings that are manufactured by the music I listen to.
I do want music that has meaning and depth beyond a junior high sort of sentiment, and I do want music that I can relate to or empathize with.
I've done nothing this weekend, and it's felt great.
I started reading The Catcher in the Rye again. I read it when I was 16, but I think I'll get more out of it this time.
I'm not sure why this Ashlee Simpson thing is getting so much attention. Synthetic pop stars have been lip synching for years, and it's not hard to tell. I feel bad for her more than anything, but it was pretty messed up for her to pin it on her band.
Next up on the movie checklist: I Heart Huckabees.

FRI - 10.29.04 - 3:49 AM
This was not just exciting playoff baseball. This was history. This was remarkable and monumental. This will be talked about for as long as sport exists.
In a way, I'm sad to see it end. Baseball is gone until the spring. On the other hand, this Royals season was so excruciatingly painful, I'm ready for a break. Thank goodness for college football's top two teams.
I like the Cardinals, but I was definitely behind the Red Sox this time. For one, their fans deserved it. I browsed around a Sox message board that night, and it was really amazing to read what they had to say. Very poignant with a deep satisfaction that I can't fully appreciate. Also, they now become part of the problem as far as baseball economics go. No more sentimental favorites or feeling bad for them. Their payroll is closing in on $200 million, and that's disgusting.
I was glad to see Johnny Damon do so well in Game 7 of the LCS and then through the World Series. Between he and Beltran, it was a spectacular postseason for former Royals.
Tonight I went to the Haunted Forest somewhere southeast of Norman with a group of friends. I normally find that kind of stuff boring, but I had a great time. It was probably the company. Afterward, we watched a DVD of comedian Eddie Izzard. He's good stuff.
Now I must sleep.

Somewhere in the next five hours, I'll vote for the first time. I spent about half an hour today going through the state questions and making my decisions. I'm not well informed on most of the state and local races though, I'm afraid. I'll do the best I can. As for the presidential race, I think it's a particularly important election and I have my opinion. I just hope that the Supreme Court doesn't have to make the decision again.
Saturday was great; saw most of the second half of the Sooners' win, and at night hung out with a bunch of friends, old and new. Sunday was decent; braved the rain to make it to church, saw the fourth quarter of the Chiefs' win, and watched Young Frankenstein in between drifts of sleep. I can't think of many things funnier than the musical number with Dr. Frankenstein and the monster.

I signed a petition on my way in. Something about getting a measure for better roads and bridges on a ballot in the future. I was feeling good, and I chatted the guy up a bit.
I signed my name in the voter registry, filled out my ballot, fed it in the machine, got a sticker, and walked out.
I had a wonderful, subtle feeling of pride and self-worth. No exuberance, but an understated joy. As corny as that sounds.
Obviously I'm not real happy with the way things turned out. My boy Bill Nations is the only person I helped into office, although my state questions did ok; I voted against the lottery ones and marriage amendment. I expected the latter to pass, but found the margin a little disgusting.
I'm bummed tonight, but who knows how I'll feel in the coming days, weeks, and months. I'm glad the presidential race is over (assuming it is). I'm tired of all the bullshit. I'm ready to get on with everything and whatever.

Ocean's Twelve is really good for about an hour, then it goes in the tank. But it surpassed my expectations.
