Subject: Service Velocity Definition

There are 3 types of service velocity: software development, service deployment, and market expansion.

TYPE I: We want to get software into the hands of the service providers ASAP. To do this, we want to have software developers develop software faster. Motivation: Short-term viability.

TYPE II: We want to get services running in the field faster. Service providers have said that software development is only 10-20% of the complete time from concept to having a service running in the field with paying consumers. Motivation: Mid-term viability. As software packages pile up at the service providers without being deployed, I suspect that the service providers will stop ordering new software from the software developers.

TYPE III: We want to have lots of software on the market to stimulate platform sales which will in-turn stimulate more software sales. Writing software in a popular, but not necessarily good language (e.g., JAVA, visual basic) may increase the developer pool beyond the developers trained in product specific software. Also, since JAVA developers know that their software can run on more than a few product specific platforms, they will be more inclined to write software. With more developers generating more software, the platforms will become more attractive (like the PC). More platforms will inspire more software demand and the cycle will continue. Motivation: long-term viability.
