Okay, rant over! On with the story…
Dedicated to whoever sang, "Don't Give Up On Us, Baby", for a wonderful song.
It was only a moment, barely enough time to realise what was happening before it all ended, and things returned to the way they had been.
You smiled.
A genuine, heart-warming smile that was reflected in your eyes, giving them a life of their own, and seemed to light up the entire bridge with its warmth in the moment it was present.
A smile that was so infectious that it made everyone else, including myself, want to smile in return, to share in its sheer joyousness, and to love life.
A smile that transformed you, back to the way you once were, when you were passionate, dedicated, to the time when that smile was more frequent in coming, even more radiant than now.
A smile that reminded me of our life on New Earth, of the times we shared together, of everything that had been said between us there, and everything that could have been ours, if only we'd taken the time.
Yet, before I could blink, it had gone, disappeared, and instead, you were devoid of feeling, an empty smile, the way you have so often lately, without the light in your eyes, or the genuine pleasure accompanying it.
But the memory will stay with me for days.
Because, if only for a moment, I saw Kathryn.
