How TCPC was started
It is very difficult to describe how we felt in the summer of 1999, when 22 of
us entered Canada as refugees. There were mixed feelings: joy at being able to
enter Canada and enjoy complete freedom without fear of any persecution,
intimidation, repression and racial discrimination; and sadness because we had
to leave our families behind possibly for many years to come.
Most of us did not speak English. We were amazed when we saw the big city of
Toronto. It was intimidating. We promised to help each other. That way, we
thought, we would be able to face this new challenge. We formed an association
to help our members when the need arises. Our seed money was the initial
membership fee of $15.
Canada, a nation with a golden heart
As days passed by, we learned that Canada has all the infra-structure to assist
political refugees like us. Our fears and apprehension subsided as we received
help from various government agencies and NGOs. All refugees were looked after
until they were able to take care of themselves. It was a dream come true.
At about the same time, H. H. the Dalai Lama, our spiritual and temporal leader
of Tibetans around the world, made two speeches in the USA (in Indiana and in
New York. They was something like this:
..there are still many Tibetan children in world who are uneducated and no
access to safe drinking water...
It was the wake-up call and made us look beyond personal difficulties and strive
for greater good.
TCPC
As Canadian Tibetans, we can help others who are in need of help. We vowed to
help others and give a helping hand instead of receiving one. The joy of giving
is joy for ever. We used our seed money for forming an organization that can
sustain Tibetan culture and principles of non-violence and compassion. All of
this happened within 4 months time in a foreign land.
Thank You Canada
Canada gave us the courage and empowerment. Thank you, Canada.
God bless us all.
May suffering fall upon none.
Long live H.H. the Dalai Lama.
Peace on Earth. |
