Science Department Safety Regulations
**Follow the rules applicable to your course**
Follow the teacher's instructions carefully.
Never attempt unauthorized experiments; NO laboratory work may be carried on without the teacher's permission.
Closed-toe shoes are required during all experiments.
Loose clothing should be avoided and long hair should be tied back during all experiments.
NO horseplay or practical jokes.
Do not eat or drink in the lab.
Read the label on the chemical you use to learn the hazards involved as a reminder of precautions to use.
When heating a test tube, point the open end toward the wall and away from other people.
Do not heat a closed system; do not stopper a hot vessel or one in which gas is being given off.
Never handle electrical equipment with wet hands or while standing in damp areas.
Report any accident or injury immediately.
Never use damaged glassware.
Never touch face or eye when working with chemicals.
Wear goggles during all lab procedures except when specified by instructor.
Never taste anything in the lab unless directed to do so by your teacher.
Never return used or unused chemicals in a reagent bottle.
Never inhale a substance directly when smelling it. Waft the fumes toward you.
Use the fume hood when handling poisonous or irritating fumes.
Add acid to water (more concentrated to less concentrated)
Never force glass tubing into rubber stoppers.
Never view the sun or lasers directly.
Never overload circuits.
Any equipment not specifically used in the lab you are conducting is to be left untouched.
Know the location of eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, and fire blankets, and know how to use them.
At no time should any equipment, supplies, chemicals, or specimens be removed from any science classroom or laboratory.
