Food pantries are places that give food to people in need. Most food pantries are small and operated at churches by volunteers. They often require some kind of identification and proof that you are low income. Foods distributed most often include canned foods, rice, beans, bread, cereal, and occasionally produce items. Info Line (1-800-339-6993) or the LA Coalition to End Hunger & Homelessness (213-439-1070) can refer you to food pantries and free meal locations in your area. If you have some money or food stamps but still not enough, you may be interested in food cooperatives. The largest food cooperative in southern California is called SHARE (Self Help & Resource Exchange). In the SHARE program you pay $14.00 or $15.00 in cash or food stamps and do two hours of community service per monthly. In exchange you get a package of food that has a retail value of between $30-$40. you may buy more than one package. The package usually includes 6-10 lbs. of meat and several lbs. of produce. There are also vegetarian packages and packages that have extra meat. To find the SHARE location nearest you call 1-800-773-SHARE. Anyone can participate in the SHARE program, no matter what their income or immigration status. Southland Farmer's Market Association's Market Basket Program provides participants with a basket of high quality farm fresh produce every other week at a cost of $7.00 food stamps are accepted. You can save money and have nutritious food by growing some of your own vegetables in community gardens. To find out where community garden space is available, or to get materials, seeds, and advice on gardening, you can contact the following organizations: Common Ground L.A. Grows
At certified farmer's markets, you can buy fresh products directly from farmers and growers. Vegetables, fruit, nuts, honey, eggs, and many other items are available year-round, rain or shine, in a relaxed, outdoor atmosphere. At most locations you can save an average of 20-30% on produce which come from farms that are family-owned and operated. Food stamps are accepted.
