IN AUSTRALIA |
29th January 2001 - Torquay - Practises in Australia Meeting with M. Joe Remenyi, director of the International and Community Development studies at the University of Deakin in Geelong M. Remenyi subscribed to our mailing list and proposed us to come and visit him in Australia, to talk about micro-finance. He is the author of "Where credit is Due" (ITP, London, 1991) and with Ben Quinones "Microfinance for poverty alleviation" (Pinter, London, 2000). He is involved in micro-finance as a researcher, a teacher and a practitioner. He has already taken part in many studies about micro-finance in Asia, Europe and the United States. He is about to undertake a study about the implementation of savings - not only credit - schemes in urban areas in Bangladesh. Joe Remenyi tells us that the Australian micro-finance institutions are mainly dealing with third world countries. The banking services for the poor in Australia are in fact largely provided by Credit Unions and informal means. The aboriginal communities only are benefiting from some micro-finance schemes to help them launch micro-businesses, such as art galleries. |
