CUNA INDIAN MOLAS FROM PANAMA These layered patterns are made by the Cuna indian women of the San Blas Islands in the Caribbean Sea near panama. Traditionally they are made from fabric and incorporated into jackets and blouses. We will make ours with paper. They can be as simple or intricate as the students wish. For starters use only two or three layers. Work up to 7 layers and see what you can create. First draw a very large simple design on the paper. It can be abstract or can look like a plant or animal, sun, or star. Cut out the first shape. The first frame is the top layer of your mola. Save the inner shape for little shapes to go onto the final layer. Now place another paper underneath the first frame and draw a second design ¼ inch away from the first outline. Cut this out. Place the second paper on another paper and draw one or several smaller designs in this paper and cut them out. Layer the papers with the largest frame on the top. Each successively smaller frame underneath. Staple, glue or tape each of the layers together. Put several molas together to make a wall-hanging for your room. |
