EUROPEAN QUILLING

Quilling Is a craft involving long thin strips of paper that have been tightly coiled and glued onto a background paper in groups to form designs, flowers, animals etc.  This art form was used to create framed artwork and to decorate small chests.  Materials are readily available in most schools.
Cut construction paper in strips 1/8” in width.  A variety of colors can be used or all one color on a contrasting background may be used.  Tightly coil the paper around a needle.  Following a preprinted design or by creating as you go glue the coils into whatever shape desired.  Coils may be pinched to create an ellipse or leaf shape.  Coils may form a scroll with one end of the paper coiled one direction and the other end coiled the opposite direction.
Students may find flower designs using straight stems, pinched leaf shapes and groupings of coils or pinched petal shapes to form the blossoms a good beginning design.  Final work may be fragmed in a shadow-box for an elegant look.  The quilling could be a side decoration to a matte used to frame a graduation certificate or Wedding announcement.
