OJOS DE DIOS Ojos de Dios are made with two crossed sticks and leftover yarn or rope. They can be tiny using toothpicks and string or Q-tips with glittered ends and yarn. They can be medium sized using popcicle sticks and yarn. In Mexico they are sometimes huge using logs and ropes. Traditional Mexican Ojos de Dios may have a central "ojo" with additional "ojos" added to the ends of each stick year by year until there are five. 1. Cross sticks to make a frame. 2. Attach the yarn to the center of the crossed sticks and tie with a slip knot or square knot. 3. Wrap the yarn all the way around one stick and carry it across to the next stick. Keep work as close to the center of the frame as possible. 4. Wrap the yarn all the way around this stick and carry it across to the next stick. Be sure to always wrap around in the same direction. Turn the cross as you go. You can tie on different colors at certain points to create bands of color, or use variegated yarn for an interesting effect. 5. When you wish to finish off your "ojo" be sure that there is still a length of stick so the yarn will not slip off the end. Tie off with two half-hitch knots and a drop of glue. You can tie a loop in the end of the yarn to provide a hanging spot. |
