Wisconsin 2001 Spring Turkey |
This year was rather tough hunting as only 1 of 4 TeamBob members got birds. Birds were henned up and did not gobble at all after 8am on any of the 4 days we hunted in Dickeyville, WI. Birds would gobble on the roost and then shut up as soon as they hit the ground or soon after. Here is a Team picture of the people that were on this hunt followed by other hunts in other parts of the state. |

This bird is dedicated to Brad who has finally come on a TeamBob hunting trip. He had not gotten a bird before and I wanted him to have first dibbs on any bird that came into range. It was a quiet morning after raining all night. Brad and I were sitting on the bottom of a ridge overlooking a small field. We thought the previous 2 mornings they flew down to this field and they were using it as their strutting zone. We heard birds across the field from us till around 8am and then nothing for an hour and a half. I was laying on the ground with my gun at the ready position laying next to me. I had looked over my left and saw that Brad had been sleeping for quite some time now but did not think anything of it. An occasional yelp and cluck was all we did for calling. I heard a twig snap to the right of me and I glanced over to see 2 white heads walking behind some brush and thorns. There was not much to do but watch then enter the field and wait for a time to raise the gun. 1 bird came into the field and he did not like what he saw so he went right back into the woods and then the other came out and started walking and eating as he wondered away from us. I knew it was now or never to get a shot off and I rolled, aimed and fired. I think Brad jumped up before I did but it was the only bird that came within range and it looked like he was leaving so the shot was made. Should have been yours Brad. Bob |
