A Look Through The Crystal Ball for 2002
(Done on 12-27-01)
The Rock - This will be a landmark year for "The People's Champion," and while things may start off well for him, a major setback will occur right around the middle of March - which coincidentally is when Wrestlemania X-8 is scheduled. Apparently, someone outside the current WWF Roster has been watching Raw and Smackdown! with studious interest while planning an attack. A lengthy fight will ensue for the better part of the year, with a former WWF main-eventer challenging The Rock as never before. However, there's no reason to fret. After all that befalls "The Great One" during his time of crisis, he will emerge wiser and stronger than ever before.
Stone Cold - With millions of fans loathing him worldwide, Stone Cold continues to be the most hated man in the business. But, around the beginning of summer, the light will begin to dawn when someone from his past shows up to steer him in the right direction. It will be a slow go, but sometime before the Thanksgiving turkey is cut, Stone Cold will again be everyone's favorite Rattlesnake - just not their most trusted one.
Triple H - Much of Triple H's success is predicted on his decision-making ability. If "The Game" attempts to stand alone, he will quickly fail. However, if he is able to recognize his true friends and is willing to form an unholy alliance with a figure from his past, nothing will stand in the way of his becoming the top Superstar in the industry. As a big player in this faction, "The Game" will have no person in his rank and will stand on top of the mountain.
Kurt Angle - An awakening of sorts is in store for the American Hero. After repeatedly getting screwed, Angle will turn on "the system" and go on an ankle-breaking spree. By summer, a most dangerous opponent with a lengthy submission background will enter the WWF with his sights set on the American Hero's ankle. While no clear-cut winner emerges from this conflict, one thing is certain: When the smoke clears, neither competitor will ever be the same.
The Undertaker - Personal trauma leads the Deadman to refocus himself and resurrect personality aspects that most thought long buried. Can you say "Old School"? Before fall, The Undertaker will go from being a beloved veteran to the most hated WWF Superstar of all time. His treacherous actions and despicable deeds will make fans wish that they had never pondered the return of the "Man from the Darkside."
Chris Jericho - "Y2J" has been claiming all along that he is the man for the new millennium - and 2002 will prove it! After losing a major title due to interference from a hated foe, Jericho will realize that there is one thing missing since he began his WWF tenure - a trusted companion. Once this protege is found, the "Ayatolla of Rock 'n' Roll-a" will complete his meteoric rise to the top of the Federation, headlining pay-per-views into the next decade.
Booker T - Furious over repeatedly getting on WWF programming, Booker T will enlist the aid of a loved one in his quest for respect. After the family member also "disses" him, the Booker Man will face a major career decision: Whether to continue his in-ring battles or take a leave of absence for the lead role in a Broadway musical.
The Hardy Boyz and Lita - A schism will develop within the Hardy clan, and it will not be a pleasant one. A lover's scorn will rip the brothers apart, unleashing a family feud more vile than any seen before. One Hardy will emerge victorious, while the other will be banished from the public eye - at least temporarily.
Perry Saturn - True love will come knocking for Perry Saturn. After successfully recovering from the demise of his companion Moppy, Saturn will stumble upon a janitor's closet where the cleaning instrument of his dreams will sweep him off his feet. Saturn will discover that this new broom is his soulmate, and the two will have a brush with a lifetime of happiness.
X-Pac - Perhaps nobody in the WWF will have a bigger year than X-Pac. By the time the groundhog has seen his shadow, fans will have forgotten the "X-Pac Sucks!" chant. Instead, they will chant three magical letters at the young superstar and his friends. A welcome takeover involving a reformation will hurl X-Pac into the spotlight again, selling an unimaginable number of t-shirts and action figures.
Kane - A major victory early in the year will show the world that this monster isn't going to take a backseat to anyone. Kane will battle exclusively against another big man, and still come out victorious. Unfortunately, a weakness will be revealed, leading the "Big Red Machine" to go into hiding until the dust clears. With this behind him, he will return refocused and ready to achieve major success in the singles division.
Tajiri - The "Japanese Buzzsaw" will slice through all competitors in the early months of the new year. But as May Day approaches, an old nemesis from the "Land of the Rising Sun,"equipped with a familar sensei, will attempt to buy Tajiri's services, or end his career for not cooperating. After realizing he cannot defeat this Japanese legend, Tajiri will have no choice but to leave his fans misty-eyed.
Edge - Edge will ride a pendulum on his way to winning the WWF Championship. Each time his goal is clearly in sight, his relationship with his brother Christian swings him away from victory. Only by removing his diabolical sibling will Edge finally snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Christian - While Christian has already performed the first step in permanently dissolving the E & C Dynasty, this will be the year he takes it to the next level. The renegade brother will no longer be performing his "Con-Chair-To" solo. Instead, he will recruit followers from a group of angry, disgruntled siblings and lead them on a rampage across the Federation. Nobody will be safe from this band of brothers.
APA (Faarooq & Bradshaw) - One too many all-night, beer, cigar and poker parties will force Faarooq and Bradshaw to see the light. The two will rename themselves the APAA (Acolytes Protesting Against Alcohol), while becoming the lead spokesmen for herbal tea.
Rob Van Dam - At the greatest sports-entertainment extravaganza of them all, RVD will walk out of Canada with a major title. This will begin a historic 23-month reign for the "Whole Dam Show," in which he will defeat and embarrass everyone who gets in his way, except a certain "Mr. JL," who will prove to be a viable contender for RVD's title.
Shane McMahon - After years of working behind the scenes of the sports-entertainment business, Shane O'Mac will become obsessed with competing. He will go on a brief hiatus to learn martial arts and submission wrestling, and then return to the ring full-time. After a tremendous run to start his career, the Boy Wonder will run into trouble when he meets RVD in a battle of the "Van Terminators."
Rhyno - The "Man-Beast" will re-introduce a familar championship, which he will defend proudly, despite the WWF not recognizing the extreme title. After a hardcore nemesis steals this prestigious belt from his waist, Rhyno will turn his attention to grabbing anything that shines. Don't be surprised to see him carrying so many titles, that he needs an assistant to carry them all.
Raven & Chris Benoit - Raven will form an unlikely tandem with a returning superstar. These two will capture the WWF Tag Team championship on more than one occasion during the year. The "Rabid Flock" will shock some Federation fans with their take-no-prisoners attitude.
Mike Awesome - Awesome finally gets the attention he deserves by ridding the WWF of one of its top Superstars. The attention drawn by this "Career Killer" will merit him numerous title opportunities.
Kanyon - Championship gold is clearly in Kanyon's future for 2002. His performance at the "crown jewel of sports-entertainment" will earn him another nickname: "WrestleMania MVP."
The Hurricane & Mighty Molly - They will attract more than a few Superstars to their league of heroes, and this group will hold five different titles at one point. By year's end, The Hurricane will leave this justice league and ally himself with the most despised man in all of sports-entertainment!
