Where do I
begin? I remember it like it was yesterday. It was Janurary 30th.
I had gotten an offer from the WWF earlier that month but I
seriously had to think about it. I usually turned to my mother
when it came to making hard decisions like this. It always seemed
that she knew the right thing to do so we were talking on the
phone.
"Ma, do you think I should do it? Do you really think I
should do it?" I asked.
"You gotta do what's best for you, sweetheart. Opportunities
like this don't happen everyday." She replied.
"Do you know how famous I'd become? I've always dreamed
being famous."
"How much is Vince offering you?"
"A lot of money. I wouldn't mind having it at all."
"Well, you better go make that money, sweethart. A lot of
people would kill to be in your shoes. Take advantage of this,
girl."
I thought about my mama's words and the more I thought about it,
the more I realized she was right. Opportunities like this didn't
happen everyday and I was being offered a lot of money. So I
decide to accept Vince's offer. The next day, I called Vince and
told him my decision. He set up a meeting for later that night.
Vince told me to attend "Raw Is War" and that there
would be a backstage pass waiting for me at the box office.
"Raw Is War" was coming to Canada and it had been sold
out for months. Everything was happening so fast.
*********
As I was driving to the arena, I still couldn't believe that I
was about to become a part of the World Wrestling Federation. I
was sacrificing a lot by doing this. My life was about to change
permanently. I was happy about this but I still couldn't help but
wonder, am I doing what's best for me? There were tons of people
at the arena when I arrived. Some were walking inside, some were
getting out their cars, some were selling merchandise. Just
imagine...one day, these same people will come to the shows just
to see me. I drove backstage and told security who I was when
they were curious. I felt so weird here. It was one thing to look
at all these expensive cars and mine. I had to drive my mother's
car (a red Volvo) since mine was in the shop. I was wearing a red
top and blue jeans. Like Vince said, a backstage pass was given
to me when I arrived. I walked to a door and as soon as I did,
Jerry 'The King' Lawler, Lillian Garcia, Too Cool, & The Kat
had arrived. The Kat was all over Jerry so I assumed they were a
couple.
"Are you Trish Stratus?" The Kat pointed to me.
"Yeah." I replied.
"Well, I'm Stacey, this is Jerry, that's Scott, that's Brian
and that's Lillian."
"Nice to meet you, I'm Trish." I shook all their hands.
"Vince told me about you. We'll show to his office."
"Thank you, Stacey. Lillian, I love that skirt."
"Thank you. You don't look too bad yourself." Lillian
smiled.
"Thank you!"
"Hey, dad, I need help on this move I've been trying to do
lately but it ain't been working."
"Wait a minute! Grandmaster Sexay is your son?" I asked
Jerry.
"Of course he is, you didn't know that?" Jerry said.
"No, I'm afraid I didn't."
"So let me get this straight. Grandmaster Sexay is your son
and you go with Jerry Lawler?" I asked.
"Yeah." Stacey replied.
Stacey was so nice to me. I knew we would have a good friendship.
Lillian was nice too. I knew we would have a good friendship.
They introduced me to everyone backstage. Everyone was so nicer
than they seemed on television.
"I gotta go, Trish. I got a match but anyway, Vince's office
is
down the hallway, then to the left and it's the second door on
the right.
Okay?"
"Yeah, I got it. Thank you so much, Stacey. Good luck."
"Thanks."
Stacey walked into the women's locker room. Someone tapped me on
my shoulder, I turned around.
"Are you Trish Stratus?" This man asked me.
"Yeah."
"Vince said you need to hurry up and get to his
office."
"Oh! Thank you very much."
I started walking quickly towards Vince's office. I turned the
corner and bumped into someone. We both fell to the ground. My
head throbbed for a minute. I looked up to see who it was I
bumped into and what I saw was a face so beautiful that I can't
even describe it.
"I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention to where I was
going." He said.
"No, it was my fault. I was running." I replied.
The guy helped me up. It was Jeff Hardy.
"Well, I guess I should introduce myself. I'm Jeff... Jeff
Hardy."
"I know who you are. I'm Trish Stratus."
We both shook hands. He was wearing a blue shirt with the
Superman sign on it and some psychedelic red pants with some kind
of design on them. There was something about Jeff that made me
feel so open. His eyes and his voice was so...hypnotizing.
"So where are you headed?" Jeff asked.
"To Vince McMahon's office." I replied.
"Me too! Would you like to walk together?" He asked.
"Sure."
"I heard some of the guys talking about a new girl. Are you
the new girl?"
"Vince has the answer to that question."
"Oh. So you're joining the WWF."
"Yeah, I decided to accept Vince's offer."
"You'll like it here. It's a lot of fun. The fans make it
worth while." Jeff said.
"You of all people should know that. You and Matt got A LOT
of fans."
Jeff laughed. We had a good chemistry.
"Time sure does fly, doesn't it?" Jeff said.
"Why do you say that?" I asked.
"We're here." Jeff said.
"Oh!"
Time sure does fly when you're talking to Jeff Hardy...when
you're having fun.
"So you found your way here, huh?" Vince asked.
Jeff and I just walked in his office. Jeff's brother, Matt, was
already there. Matt was wearing a green shirt and a black jeans.
Vince was wearing a white shirt with buttons tucked into dark
brown pants. The room had a wooden desk with a bunch of papers
and a phone on it. There was long leather couch across from it.
"Stacey and Jeff helped me." I replied.
Vince and I shook hands.
"Trish, this is Matt. Matt, this is Trish."
Matt and I shook hands.
"Nice to meet you." I said.
"Nice to meet to meet you too." He replied.
"I assume you and Jeff have already met." Vince said.
Jeff looked at me.
"Yeah, we've already met." Jeff and I sat down beside
Matt.
"Okay, Trish, I have your contracts ready for you to read.
Do you plan to sign them?" Vince asked.
I looked at Jeff and said yes. I don't know why I did that.
"Good." Vince said.
"Why are we here, Mr. McMahon?" Matt asked.
"I'm glad you said that, Matt. Trish, I want to get you on
television right away...tonight. That's where Matt and Jeff come
in." Vince said.
I looked at Jeff, he looked at me, eye contact.
"Trish, the writers and I want to present you as 'Jeff
Hardy's girlfriend'."
My heart skipped a beat.
"When I say that, I mean, interfering in matches,
accompaning Matt and Jeff to the ring, in other words, being a
cheerleader, basically. It should start off your career in a huge
way and it will help Matt and Jeff's career tremendously. You
see, I have plans for the Hardy Boyz just like I have for you,
Trish. So what do you say?"
I looked at Jeff again.
"Yes."
**Later That Day**
Stacey and me were in the women's locker room going through a
bunch of clothes from me to wear later that night.
"What about this?" Stacey asked as she showed me this
pair of purple leather short shorts.
I shook my head and turned back to the monitor. This girl I had
met earlier by the name of Amy was accompanying some Mexican guy
to the ring in a dark match. She tossed them aside and got
something else off a hanger. It was a blue tied top.
"What about this?"
"No, Stacey! I'm not like you. No offense but I don't wanna
wear what you
wear."
"I GOT IT! What about this?" Joanie asked.
She showed me this beautiful zebra-lined jacket and a cowboy hat
to match.
"I LOVE IT! I'm wearing that!"
I grabbed the outfit from Joanie to see how I looked in the
mirror.
"I look like a diva. What am I gonna wear under it?"
"What about this?" Stacey asked.
She showed me this leather tank top & a short skirt to match.
It was beautiful.
"Oh, Stacey. I've only known you for thirty minutes and I
love you already! Thank you so much." I gave Stacey a hug.
"Thank you, Chyna, I mean, Joanie." I gave her a hug
too.
Stacey introduced me to Joanie and she was so helpful in finding
something for me to wear. I looked at my watch.
"I guess I'll go get dressed. I'm on in thirty
minutes." I said.
While I was getting dressed, Jeff happened to cross my mind. I
don't know why but ever since I met Jeff, I couldn't stop
thinking about him. He seemed to haunt my mind. I thought to
myself, did I have feelings for Jeff
***********
Matt and Jeff
were in the men's locker room changing into their wrestling gear.
"Who are you thinking about?" Matt asked.
"How do you know I'm thinking about someone?" Jeff
replied.
"Jeff, I've known you for 22 years. Who are you thinking
about?" Matt asked.
It was quiet for a minute.
"Trish." Jeff sighed.
"Why are you thinking about her?"
"She's pretty, that's all."
"Jeff, stop playing."
"Okay, okay... I like her a little." Matt smiled.
"Awwww! My baby brother has a crush on someone."
Matt pinched Jeff's checks. Jeff pushed Matt away.
"It ain't nothing serious."
"We'll see about that."
"What do you mean?" Jeff asked.
"You know what I mean."
Matt laughed to himself. Jeff had a serious look because as much
as he hated to admit it, he knew Matt was right.
"I wonder if she feels the same way about me..." Jeff
said to himself.
**Later**
"So you got it?"
"Yeah."
"Okay, good luck, Trish."
"Thanks."
Everyone wished me luck, Andrew, Stephanie, Chris, Dwayne, Paul,
Ivory, Jacqueline, Amy, Michael, Jim, Jerry, Brian, Scott and
Shane. These people had to be the nicest people on Earth. Matt
and Jeff were about to take on Road Dogg & X Pac. What
shocked me the most was that Sean was so sweet and respectful.
Road Dogg was a flirt.
"DX! You're on!" Someone yelled.
"Good luck, Trish." Tori said.
"May the best man win." Road Dogg & X Pac shook
Matt and Jeff's hands.
Their music began playing and they stepped onto the TitanTron. My
heart was pounding. I was pacing. I was breathing. Tori told me
to keep it cool and to not show my nervousness.
"Nervous?" Matt said.
"Can you tell?" I sighed.
"Look at yourself. Calm down."
"They're not gonna like me."
"How do you know that, Trish? Those people are gonna love
you. You're
beautiful." Jeff said.
I smiled at Jeff. He was so sweet and supportive, along with
Matt. I was gonna like being his 'girlfriend' It was then I
realized I wasn't nervous anymore. Jeff's presence made me feel
so safe and calm. I had only known Jeff for four hours but I felt
I had known him forever.
************
"So X Pac, just like Tori can interfere, MY GIRL can
interfere." Jeff
spoke into the microphone.
I was standing in the ring while Jeff was introducing me. I
couldn't believe how many people were in the arena. I could hear
some guys saying how good I looked. It was hard to hear over all
those girls screaming for Matt and Jeff. I couldn't describe how
good it felt on my debut in the World Wrestling Federation. I say
that because even though they didn't know me, they were still
cheering for me.
"Your girl?" Sean said into the microphone.
That was mine and Jeff's cue. Jeff put his arm around my waist.
Damn, he smelled good. I interlocked his fingers with mine. I
wasn't told
to do that but I did it anyway...I wanted to. I had a feeling he
did too.
We both were smiling. Matt was looking all tough.
"Yeah, my girl. Road Dogg, X Pac, Tori, let me introduce you
to my girlfriend... Trish Stratus."
*********
"Come on, Jeff!" Matt screamed.
Both, Jeff and X Pac were trying to tag in their partners. Matt
was so anxious to get in the ring. Who could blame him? He was so
talented. Jeff looked hurt. I looked at Jeff with concern in my
eyes. I was supposed to "look with concern" but my face
wasn't a mask right now. Jeff tagged in Matt. X Pac tagged in
Road Dogg. Matt handled Road Dogg. He then started kicking on
Sean. Jeff got on his feet. Matt did the Twist of Fate on Road
Dogg. Jeff got ready to do the Swanton Bomb. That was mine and
Tori's cue. Jeff did the Swanton Bomb and the crowd went wild.
Jeff got the cover but Tori pulled the referee. I looked at Tori
as evil as I could. I took off my jacket, threw my hat on the
ground and walked over to Tori. I could hear JR say uh-oh. I
started arguing with Tori, like the writers told me to. Then I
slapped Tori so hard, her neck veins showed on her neck. (I told
her it would hurt.) Next, I took Tori by the hands and slammed
her back into the steel steps. I didn't want to hurt Tori because
she was so nice to me backstage but I had to do what the script
told me. Sean looked at me like I was crazy, Matt turned him
around, did the Twist of Fate again, and finally Matt and Jeff
won. Jeff and I hugged and kissed (just a peck) like we were told
but something else told us to do that...if you know what I mean.
**Two months later**
I had become very popular in the WWF. I gained a lot of respect
too. I
had not only been a 'cheerleader' but a wrestler too. I had
become very close with Matt and Jeff. I had become their little
sister. Wherever I went, they went. Jeff and Matt were so
protective of me, they had to be the sweetest men on Earth. Me
and Matt & Jeff's 'other little sister,' Amy, were very cool
with each other. That was my girl. In the ring, Jeff and I were
called the 'cutest couple' by the fans. Who could blame them? We
hugged, kissed, held hands, we did it all like the writers told
us to do in the beginning. I was living in a daydream when we
were a "couple." I liked Jeff but I couldn't make it
obvious, too much was at risk. I wanted Jeff bad. Over these last
two months, I had gotten know him and he was "the one"
I had always dreamed of but I couldn't let him know that because
I cared for him too much.
*****
I had been riding with Matt, Jeff and Amy to all the shows, their
autograph signings and to the hotels. They were so good to me.
Therefore, wherever they went, I went. Our next show was in
Raleigh, NC and of course, that was Matt and Jeff's home state.
They were going home.
"He's not gonna like me." I said.
"Trish, you get nervous too easily." Amy asked.
"Why would he let you stay with us if he didn't like
you?"
"Yeah, I remember the day I first trained with the boyz. Mr.
Hardy was sooooo sweet. He likes females." Amy smiled.
"Yeah, Trish, dad's gonna love you. Remember you felt this
way when you
first walked with us to the ring? What happened... all those
people liked
you. You know we love you, Trish. If dad doesn't like you, we'll
make him
like you." Jeff put his arm around me.
I smiled at him. He had to be the sweetest man on Earth... he WAS
the sweetest man on Earth. I had never felt this way before about
someone. I wanted to be with Jeff so much but I couldn't tell
him. It was a hard temptation to fight and I didn't know how much
longer I could fight it.
