Solaris no longer comes with a free compiler, so I must either buy one from Sun or use GCC. But how can I download and compile a compiler without having a compiler in the first place?

Steve Christensen runs a great site called Sun Freeware (http://www.sunfreeware.com). This site contains many prebuilt packages for Solaris (SPARC and Intel) that can be downloaded and installed using the package tools in Solaris. Packages are available for the platforms for Solaris 2.5 and above.
