When I was about 7, I read a book that made me fall in love with German Shephards. For two years I begged and begged for one. My dad was in the army, and we were used to him going away for a while. But one day, he said he was leaving, and couldn't tell us where to, or when he would be back.       This scared me. I'm a daddy's girl, and I was worried about my hero. He promised me he would come home, and to prove it, he promised when he got back we would get a house. And we would get a dog. A German Shephard.       Dad left on a plane with a bunch of other soldiers, it was a very emotional event. A few weeks later I noticed on the news, we were at war in Saudi Arabia. (I was nine, it took a while to notice things like that.) My dad had gone off to be a front line soldier in a war.       Eventually, about a year later, he returned. How that year passed is another story. But after not too long, my parents took me to see a puppy they'd picked out. She was a pure bred, her dad was a police dog and her mom was a show dog. She was a funny looking puppy, she was all ears, but they assured us she would grow up beautiful.       We named her Kenai's Saudi Promise. Kenai is the name of a river in Alaska where we used to go fishing for salmon when I was a kid. And this funny lookin little puppy was the result of a Saudi promise that ended well. We just call her Kenai.       She has gone through obedience training, and is incredibly well behaved. She's the best natured dog in the world, but she's also a fierce guard dog when she needs to be. She knows all the commands by word and hand motion, though in her old age (12) she's getting a little lazy. She'll sit if you tell her, but she doesn't look happy about it. Her favorite command is roll over, because then she gets a belly rub.       Orignally we intended to breed her, but we found out she had hip displasia and didn't want to risk it. A few years ago, she was running (after her squeaky or the other dog, we're not sure) and she bumped into a wall. When she gets excited, she's not coordinated. The bump formed a bruise and blot clot on her ear that swelled and had to be drained. It left her with a crimped ear. It took some getting used to, but I now I think it's cute. |
