Timesplitters: Future Perfect (PS2,GC,XBOX)
Overview
Third in the series, Timesplitters: Future Perfect (commonly refered to as TS3) makes a "come back" as the final chapter in the story. With tons of upgraded features, such as new weapon, added vehicles, and a much more immense story line, one would expect that this game would be a top contender in the FPS genre. Sadly, it falls to deliver and ends up being a spoof of today's top shooters.
The storyline in this game is decent and finishes off the story for Timesplitters 1 & 2. If you aren't familar with the previous storylines, its fairly simple. A breed of creatures called Timesplitters were created and were given the ability to travel through time using objects called "time crystals." Your mission was to retrieve those crystals and keep them from the creators of the Timesplitters. In TS3, a whole new idea arises. What about using the crystals to go back in time and stop the Timesplitters from ever being created, thus ending all of the wars that occured. Along this storyline, you go forward and back in time and fight for humankind. Although gameplay really doesn't have anything to do with controling time, the story revolves around it and provides some interesting concepts (like wormholes or even seeing yourself in the future/past.)
The gameplay is decent (just like any other of the characteristics in the game) and the game flows pretty quickly. Once in a while there is a spot that seems almost unbeatable, but once you're past it the game seems too easy. The PS2 version sometimes gets bogged down and a few graphical glithches occur. Graphics over all are fine but nothing compared to some of today most recently released shooters. What's really interesting about this game is how many other games this game seems to copy features from. There's a graphics engine that supports a gravity gun (copied from Half-Life 2), a horror level that seems to mimic the feel of Doom 3, vehicles that are very similar in nature to those of Halo 2, as well as many other copied features. This really detracts from the game in some ways because the game seems to be trying to finally have some serious content but in fact, they stole many of their in-game features from other games.
The music for this game is very sci-fi themed and sound effects themselves are pretty good in some areas. Lastly, mulitiplayer is available for up to four players on one PS2/XBOX/GC or up to 16 players online (which is actually pretty fun depending on who you're playing against). There are many different of game modes to play and all arcade matches are just about completely customizable.
