Chimney Bluffs - Lake Ontario
September 2002

Chimney Bluffs
Technically these are truncated drumlins. Drumlins are large hills (in this case 180 ft high) made of dirt and rounded stones piled up by glaciers 12,000 years ago. These drumlins have been truncated by erosion since they face the weather coming off Lake Ontario, which is as large as a sea but consists of freshwater.

Looking for interesting stones
Everybody (except us) was hauling away pretty stones.

The water brings out the best colors

The cold water is quite clear

Because "it's there"--who can resist climbing?

On top it's nice and shady

The cliffs look like "badlands"
