Friends Forever?

Chapter 1

It was a bright sunny July morning when Kate Smith was pulled into the driveway. She was excited about seeing Carly she hadn't seen her in 2 whole weeks! This would be the first trail ride since Carly had left! " I'll see you later okay mom?"

"Yeah, I have some things to pick up, I should be back in a couple of hours or so"

" Yup " Kaite hurried into the barn as quick as she could, she new that her mare Pegasus would take a while grooming. She led the mare out of her stall. " You love getting caked with mud don't you Peggie?" she said. As if to answer the mare threw up her head and gave a loud stop. Katie laughed as she groomed the mare. She had the horse for only a couple of months but already they had already formed a bond. "

"Katie!!" Katie turned around to see who was calling her, it was Carly Watson, her best friend in the world. She was a wonderful rider, and she had been away for 2 weeks training in Europe with some of the top trainers in the world!

"Hi Carly" Katie exclaimed " How are you? How was your trip? Were the horses there really beautiful? Did the trainers push you alot?....."

" Whoah! One question at a time!! " Carly laughed " I am fine, my trip was great, Yes the horses were beautiful," Carly pauses to catch her breath " and Yes the trainers were grulling, but definately worth it! Does that answer everything??"

" Yup that just about does it!" Katie answered with excitment.

"Great" Carly replied. " How's Pegasus?" Carly said as she led out her 15 year old German Warmblood mare, Etora. Carly was more interested in Dressage then Katie was, and Katie liked the thrill and excitement of Eventing.

" Oh she is doing great, though maybe sometime during the week you could help me with my dressage test and getting it perfect for the show season? Pegasus has trouble with her extended trot,she always breaks into a canter"

" Sure, how about Thursday? I don't have any lessons, on that day."

" Ok!"

As the two girls tacked up, Katie filled Carly in on what happened while she was gone. "... oh and we found out that Silver the cute welsh pony is in foal!" Katie exclaimed.

" Oh did Romeo get at her??" Carly asked. Romeo was a gorgeous black thoroughbred stallion, who Melissa ( the girls' instructor ) saved from slaughter a couple of years back. When he first came to the barn he was skin and bones, but he filled out and know is Melissa main jumper.

" Yeah..." Katie said with a smile " Melissa threatened to sell him again". Both Katie and Carly know Melissa could never part with Romeo, but he could be a handful sometimes!

A couple minutes later the girls were mounted on their horses and set of on the meadow trail. The meadow trail was very special to the two of them because they were the ones who discovered, and plus they have gone on it every Sunday since as long as they can remember!

" Do you want to trot?" Katie asked.

" Sure!" Carly replied. As the girls trotted through the meadow, they slowly moved into a flowing canter. When they reached the end of the Meadow, they stopped and walked back to the barn.

" I sure have missed these trails" said Carly as she looked at Etora.

" Yeah, my too, but know that your back we can have them every Sunday agian!! "

" I guess " Carly said distantly.

The rest of the way home the girls were silent, I wonder what she meand by ' I guess' Katie thought. I thought we would do this forever....

Chapter 2

" Push her into bridle Katie..." instructed Carly, "... make sure you don't hold her too tight though, good I can see an improvement!! We should leave it at that."

Katie trotted over to her friend, " yeah" she said out of breath " I don't think I can use my legs anymore!!"

Carly giggled " times that by about 10 and you know how I felt in Europe!". The two girls walked into the barn silently. When they were inside Carly quickly headed for the tack room to call her mom

Katie untacked Pegasus put on her cooler they days were beginning to get colder, and she didn't want Pegasus to get a chill. "You were a good girl today Peggy" Katie said affectionatly. " You go in your stall for a sec, while I clean your tack". Katie put the mare in her stall, threw some hay in and hurried to the tack room, but when she reached the door something stopped her. She stood there for a second and she could hear Carly talking.

"... but mom I don't want to sell her, I can get a job and pay for half or more of everything..." Carly said in a muffled voice. Katie could tell she was on the verge of crying. "... I know I have to get a new horse to move up but..."

Oh no! This must be the reason that she seemed distant on the trail. Because she knew that there wouldn't be anymore soon since she needed to sell Etora.

" Ok mom will talk about this later but think about it ok?... Thanks, well I better go Katie must wonder where I am... no I haven't told her yet.. I know... I will "
