THIS IS A NEW WINDOW JUST CLOSE IT TO GET BACK TO THE POEMS

A Step Behind

By Payge Baker
How much can you truly know

Of places you will never go

Life will twist and steal your guide

Now you're lost and want inside

How much sense does destiny make

Why subscribe to fickle fate

The rules will change just when you learn

In silence now you miss your turn

How much time could you need

To stumble past, break and bleed

There's no one here to put you right

So now you feel the spite of life

How much pain can you endure

On the chance you might ensure

A happy moment, gone away

Still you hurt, still you stay

How much love is left to give

In all the time that you may live

The clock ticks fast within us all

Adults and children, walk or crawl

How much farther must we run

To escape those things we've done

Don't look back, the past is lies

Now you weep and close your eyes

How much farther will we go

Which places will we never know

How much longer until you find

You were always just a step behind.
