Frequently Asked Questions

The following are a number of frequently asked questions.  If you do not find the answer to your question here or throughout the site please contact us.

As a not for profit event that relies on contestant registration fees and donations it is imperative that the event be held in an area where costs can be kept low.  Holding the event in such an area allows for this to happen.  In addition, Miss Teen Western Newfoundland is about the promotion of rural communities in our area and the community spirit these areas are filled with.  Community support in rural areas for pageants has been tremendous and will make for an enjoyable event for all involved.  This competition is about the young women involved and what they can offer their communities – not the glitz and glamour a large venue can offer.

If you are chosen as a contestant for this event and are unable to secure personal transportation to the venue we will work with you to ensure you can attend.  There is a bus which runs from St. Anthony to Corner Brook and and another which runs from Deer Lake to Port aux Basques. In addition there may be other contestants from neighboring communities who you could travel with.

As a contestant in this years event your accommodations may be covered for Saturday night. However if you and your family choose to stay in the area for Friday and Sunday night we are not able to provide you with accommodations. Please contact us if you would like more information about hotels in the area.

This is a not for profit event with all money raised going toward running the competition and registration fees for the provincial event that the winner will attend. Registration and associated costs for provincial competitions can total nearly $1000 and it is our hope that we will have this amount raised by the end of the night at the Miss Teen Western Newfoundland Competition on June 31. If you are having trouble coming up the associated fees ($75 registration fee) we encourage you to contact us and we will try to help you out.  Contact local businesses in your area to ask for sponsorship. You may want to approach your local town council and mayor, hair salons, banks, dentists, and doctors.  If needed please ask us for a letter confirming your acceptance and asking your sponsor for help.

You certainly can!  Any sponsors you find will be acknowledged at the event.  We encourage business involvement and welcome these sponsors. In addition, if you and your family would prefer to pay the total of the fees on your own you are welcome to do that. If this is the case your family will be acknowledged on stage as your personal sponsor.

There is a fitness test at the regional event. It is important to us that you have committed yourself to an active lifestyle. This does not mean you need to be an athlete to do well in this event. Your overall fitness level is tested, not your athletic ability. If you are chosen as the winner you will also be expected to compete in the fitness test at the provincial level.  There will not be a swimsuit round in our event, we are a competition awarding accomplishments and achievements. We are not a "beauty" pageant!

If you are selected as the winner of the Miss Teen Western Newfoundland Competition you will be expected to choose a platform which is required for the provincial and national competitions you may attend.  A platform is a cause that you are passionate about or have been involved with in the past. Some examples include: blood donation; teen pregnancy; smoking; Mothers Against Drunk Driving; the importance of education; peer pressure.  You can chose any topic.  Don't let the word 'platform' scare you!  We want you to give a speech about a topic you care about, it is a simple as that.  At the Miss Teen Western Newfoundland Competition you will have 60 to 90 seconds to present your platform to the audience.  Cue cards or other visual aids are not permitted on stage.

No, unfortunately all your expenses may not be covered.  Most preliminary pageants do not provide the fees for registration and travel that contestants will need.  However, we commit all of our funds raised to Miss Teen Western Newfoundland and her endeavors.  We will work with you to raise fees for the provincial and national competitions but it will ultimately be your responsibility to obtain any further necessary sponsors.

If chosen as Miss Teen Western Newfoundland the fun begins!  In March 2008 you will represent your community and region at the Miss Teen Achievement Pageant in St. John’s where you could walk away with a number of scholarships for your university/college education. Once you become Miss Teen Western Newfoundland you become part of a pageant family which means any time you have a problem or question you can contact your director for help. What you do during your year is up to you. Other regional titleholders have become liaisons with schools and and other community groups. You may be asked to attend special functions and speak at a number of events. It is up to you what you do with your crown and title!

Your initial registration, travel to the event, and meals will be the cost to you and your parents. If you want to purchase clothing, evening gowns, etc. that is all at your personal expense.  We do not encourage or require this as you will not be judged on your clothing. We encourage all participants to seek sponsorship to cover the total cost of registration and all other associated costs. Beyond that, if chosen as the winner, we will work with you to obtain sponsors to attend the national and provincial events.  If you wish you can pay the remainder of these fees rather than working to find sponsors.

The quickest way to reach the director is through email, teenwestern@yahoo.ca, lorio_keefe@hotmail.com.  You may also phone (709) 639 7415.
