CALLA Starring - Kim Hee Sun - Song Seung Hun - Kim Hyun Joo. Director - Song Hee Seong. Xmas 1995. Sanwoo receives Calla (flower) every morning but has no idea who is sending it to him, one morning while travelling to work he has a chance meeting with the beautiful Jihee and starts to hope that she is the one sending him Calla. He visits the News flower shop (the nearest flower shop to his workplace) and finds Jihee at work there, he immediately believes her to be the one sending Calla. The next day Sanwoo is told he will be going to Singapore on an assignment so he visits Jihee to tell her how he feels but she has already gone. He leaves her a note and asks her to meet him but Jihee fails to turn up so he phones her and expresses his love for her, which she reciprocates. They arrange to meet when he returns. Sanwoo returns and goes to meet Jihee but she has been taken hostage by Chong and dies in the situation. Xmas 1998. Sanwoo is contemplating the past when he returns to the site of their meeting and her untimely death. He starts to wish for that day again and lo and behold he is magically transported back three years. Sanwoo realises he may have a chance to save Jihee and starts to track her down, he eventually meets the equally stunning Sujin a co-worker of Jihee at the flower shop. Calla is a love story focussing on mixed messages and coincidences and is akin to the US ‘Ground Hog day’. Calla however is much more serious and the bizarre love triangle presented before us is beautifully played out with a couple of neat twists along the way. Calla relies little on fancy camerawork and action sequences and instead uses the cast’s obvious acting talents to pull the story along. Kim Hyun Joo is the highlight of this movie playing the wonderfully shy Sujin; she enters each scene in the background and pushes her way through into our minds every single time. Refreshingly simple Calla is an enjoyable movie best watched with a girlfriend or wife. 7*******stars. |
