GOD OF GAMBLERS PART 3 - BACK TO SHANGHAI. Starring - Stephen Chiao - Ng Man Tat - Ray Lui - Gong Li. Director - Wong Jing. After losing to Sing (Stephen Chiao), Tai Kun and four of his favourite friends :) return and combine their special powers in order to defeat the disciple of God Of Gamblers. Whilst attacking Sing a time warp is inadvertently opened and Sing is transported back through time to 1937 Shanghai where he meets his grandfather Chow Tai Fook (Ng Man Tat) the effeminate 'Top Killer' of Triad. Sing must find a way back to 1991 but he inadvertently stumbles into a power struggle between Ding Lik and Wong Kam Kwai the villain of this tale. A card game is arranged with the loser having to leave Shanghai forever, but Tai Kun has followed Sing back in time and is helping Wong Kam Kwai. Sing agrees to help Ding Lik and the stage is set. As in most Asian movies of this ilk there is a love interest in the shapely form of Yu San (Gong Li) the mayor's daughter. Unfortunately she is due to wed Ding Lik. Or is she? From start to finish this movie kept me entertained, with some excellent one liners and a decent plot thrown in for good measure. Chiao and Ng Man Tat combine perfectly again in this time travelling comedy and bounce off each other with ease, it would be hard trying to imagine these 2 not working together as time after time they steal the show. From the cheesy sound effects to the sublte plot twist GOG3 is a gem of a movie, not taking itself too seriously and doing what it was created to do - entertain you! I would have marked GOG3 higher but for the final sequence, which would have suited the movie more, had it been omitted. Hard not to recommend. 7*******stars. |
