MY SASSY GIRL (YUPGI GIRL).
Starring - Joon Ji-Hyun - Chae Tae-Hyun - Yang Geum-Yong.
Director  - Kwak Jae-Yong.
2001.

Kyun Woo’s life is turned upside down after a chance meeting throws him into the arms of an extremely intoxicated young woman. After helping her out on the subway he is mistaken for being her boyfriend, reluctantly he assumes the role and helps the girl but ends up in jail for his labours.
Things don’t end there though, as upon his release she demands he explain his actions of the previous evening. Kyun Woo feels compelled to appease the enigmatic Sassy girl and is soon jumping to her every command, be it wearing high heels or being humiliated at every opportunity. What he doesn’t realise though is that he is just a plaything to help heel a broken heart. Or is he?
Romantic comedies have never really been my thing, if you ask me to choose between watching a couple of love sick teenagers or a baby oil induced lesbian love fest then the latter will generally win hands down. However after suffering a quite horrendous and excruciatingly disgusting urinary tract infection lately I wasn’t in no mood for some self loving and opted for the romance instead ;)
On this occasion I can report that I was extremely satisfied at what can be best described as Mork and Mindy meets Joe Black. Generally the comedy in romantic movies is straight out of the BBC big book of comedy. Non offending unfunny family fun. The comedy here though whilst being non offensive is very funny and flies at you thick and fast like vomit over an ill fitting toupee. If you get a hold of the overseas version then you also get a bonus disc containing some excellent out-takes and side events that occur around the pair. Including a series of vomit induced vomiting self-control segments, I know this may sound confusing, but trust me it will all make sense once you view it. I wouldn’t have minded these being included in the full feature but as the movie clocks in at 2 hours then they were obviously removed for pacing reasons. Shame really as the 2 hours actually goes by in a blur and I really didn’t want it to end.
The main thing to stand out for me in this movie was its lead Joon Ji-Hyun. She is going to go a long way in Korean cinema, she moves with ease between her characters many faces, competently portraying a hard hearted cold and calculated serial humilliator one moment to a vulnerable heartbroken girl the next. I can guarantee we will see her a lot more in the years to come.
This movie will appeal mostly to the female teenage market but don’t let that put you off. My Sassy girl combines some seriously funny moments with a subtle but yet very intriguing love story.
