TRICKY KING. (1998) Starring - Nat Chan - Eric Kot - Athena Chu - Lee Ann. Director - Aman Chang. Everyday Ohmygod waits at the train station with the hope that he can introduce himself to his dream lover DKNY. He sees her everyday but has never spoken to her. He only knows her name because it says so on her bag. Our hero is always helpful to his colleagues by helping them with their workload, this usually means he ends up working late. That is until one night he accidentally sees the boss’s son Young master having a late night sexual rendezvous with a female colleague. Young master offers Ohmygod some cash to keep his mouth shut, but the secret is leaked by a security guard who too witnessed the indiscretion. Young master believes Ohmygod has revealed the secret and so hires the King of tricks to discredit him and make him lose his job. Ohmygod struggles to find new employment and eventually stumbles into the office of the Supreme King of tricks. Here the trickster takes pity on Ohmygod and for a price $3000 US he offers to train him to be a great trickster. How can Ohmygod refuse such an offer, he is immediately enrolled in the tricky class alongside Yam, Ken, Park and I’Wont’Tell. Eventually the tricksters are hired by GoLumbus and his wife Zilla; they want to inherit their fathers’ fortune in its entirety but their sister Silvia is set to inherit half. Silvia is also an accomplished trickster herself and will prove to be a tricky target, even for the Supreme King of tricks. Tricky King is a simple comedy movie aimed at a family audience. The comedy is a blend of slapstick and lollipop humour. Anyone under 7 will probably find this movie intensely funny. However I am 33 and found Tricky King to be as funny as an army of ravenous crabs patrolling my genital area, with pitchforks ? The story works well enough, unfortunately neither the cast or scripting is actually funny. I chuckled a couple of times, and over 90 minutes that simply isn’t good enough. One of the biggest problems for me was that the comedy is very regionalised and so I just didn’t get it. Also we see a lot of gags based around notes and news paper headlines, but again these aren’t translated so just fly right on by the non Asian’s in the audience, shame on them. Just when will Asian movie corporations realise that more and more non-Asians are watching and buying their movies. In this case Wong Jing productions are responsible, and you would think he if anyone would understand this. Director Aman Chang has done himself no favours with this movie and will probably find it difficult to land himself a BBC1 Sunday evening comedy show on this evidence. Now if you live in the UK, you will know exactly what I mean by this. If you don’t then I will summarise by saying that this movie is shot well enough and looks fairly pleasant, but that is all it is, pleasant. 4****stars. |
