VERSUS. Starring - Tak Sakaguchi - Hideo Sakaki - Chieko Misaka - \\kenji Matsuda Director - Ryuhei Kiatmura. There are 666 portals that connect this world to the other side. These are concealed from all human beings. Somewhere in Japan exists the 444th portal. ‘The forest of resurrection’. Prisoner KSC2-303 has escaped from a life in prison and is set to meet a group of men who will help him evade recapture. Unfortunately the plan goes horribly wrong when his would be aides turn their guns on a young woman who has been brought along obviously against her will. In the ensuing scuffle one of the men is killed by the prisoner only to rise from ground looking extremely agitated by the recent events :) The scene is suddenly turned into a bloodbath as the captors attempt to come to terms with their colleagues inexplicable return to life. In the melee the prisoner manages to escape with the woman. She seems to know him, but they have never met. Or have they? But on to more pressing matters, just what the hell just happened? Now after searching high and low in obtaining this movie I can safely say it was worth the hassle. The wafer thin plot is simply a minor diversion in what is a truly fantastic action movie. Packed from start to finish with samurai, swords, guns and gore. This is a gem of a title that doesn’t set out to baffle you with intricate plot subtexts and mindless coincidences. Versus pays homage to the Italian zombie films of the 80’s and adds a quirkiness that only the Japanese could get away with. After all, how often do you see a film where the lead character is a 500-year-old samurai zombie buster? This movie is extremely cheesy with some obscenely over the top gore thrust upon the viewer at every opportunity. It never fails to amaze me how many new ways there are to actually kill the undead. Versus is also packed with some very dark humour almost undermining the severity of the situation the cast find themselves in, but this is all as the director has intended as we are treated to a fun packed 120 minutes. Don’t be put off by the fact that Versus won’t tax your brain cells in any way, shape or form, as this is one sick little puppy of a movie that I personally found to be extremely enjoyable. If you have ever seen the Peter Jackson movie Bad Taste then you will know exactly what to expect from Versus. FUN! 9*********stars. VIEW THE TRAILER HERE. |
