THE WESLEY'S MYSTERIOUS FILE. Starring - Andy Lau - Rosamund Kwan - Shu Qi - Roy Cheung. Director - Andy Lau. San Francisco and agent Wesley of the Aliens analysing agency (AAA) is called by Mr Chu to come look at an exciting object that he has acquired. The item is a strange blue skeletal hand that has fallen from the sky. It omits some kind of organic energy and appears to be alien. Mr Chu senses Wesley’s interest in the item and promptly tries to sell him the hand, but a third party intervenes in the shape of Fong. Wesley feels some attachment to Fong and helps her get the hand at a knock down price. As she leaves the store she turns to Wesley and tells him to get out of here and fast, but explains no further. Wesley leaves the store just as the FBI and the Double X unit arrive, fronted by Pak and Sue. Pak explains how an alien from Orion 13788 is believed to be responsible for a whole host of murders, and who is also coincidentally in the building just vacated by Wesley. After an attempt to capture the alien goes wrong Wesley intervenes to save the day, unfortunately he too is injured by the creature and is saved only by the reappearance of Fong, who displays some rather non-human qualities. Why is Fong here? Who is she and what is the bond between the two? Take a pinch of X-files add some Terminator 1and 2 mix with Biohazard and finally pour on some Men in black and….hope for the best. A love story surrounded by stolen ideas and a team of CG animators and this is what you get. The Wesley’s mysterious file is a terrible movie that feels so disjointed and out of place in this day and age. Relying on special effects to save a movie is not a good thing, the effects aren’t bad, they just vary in quality from cheesy to brilliant, all I want from effects is consistency and this movie does not provide it. The first real alien we see is a direct rip from the Tyrant monster first featured in the Resident Evil games. I wonder what Capcom think about this little bit of creative theft. Enough about the effects and onto the story, essentially a love story but with themes stolen from several well known Hollywood blockbusters, as mentioned earlier. Do the filmmakers believe we would go for this mess of a movie, uninspiring and weak are words that immediately spring to mind. I went into this movie anticipating Ros Kwan, Roy Cheung and Andy Lau to pull off a stormer, but this isn’t so as we see the cast ham their way through the script, certain scenes don’t even look scripted, just ad libbed. I expect better from this trio and am sorely disappointed that these three even considered the script. Are times that hard for them? The only one plus point to come out of this film is the memories it sparked when Andy Lau pulls out the legendary sword belt first used in the classic Saviour of the soul. Avoid this at all costs and pray the beautiful Ros Kwan chews on a few Mars’s bars before undertaking her next project. I don’t know if it is just me, but she resembles a recovering crack addict in this title. 3***stars. |
