The Living Sea was nominated for an Academy Award!
No movie released this year is likely to contain more spectacular or
astonishing images than the ones we see in The Living Sea. The film is a
truly ravishing experience... an often overpowering visual experience. -
Michael Wilmington, Chicago Sun-Times
We live on the mere 30% of the earth that rises above sea level. The ocean, which
averages two miles in depth, is the largest living space on this planet, and its
inhabitants are the largest animal communities on earth. Creatures as delicate as a
jellyfish or as powerful as a whale somehow all fit together, and we're just
beginning to understand how. We're also learning more about how our actions
affect the living sea. More than half of the planet's 5.5 billion humans are crowded
into those areas within 100 kilometers of the coastline. Pollution, overfishing --
ignorance -- are damaging the world ocean. And it's the ocean that stores and
produces much of the oxygen we breathe! It feeds us, regulates our climate, and
generates the rains that water our crops. We live because the sea lives.
The Living Sea is an IMAX film that celebrates the beauty and power of the world
ocean, as it explores this last frontier on earth. This giant screen motion picture will
play to more than 20 million people at specialized, high-tech theaters around the
world for the next several years. It is our hope that this film will have a global
impact on people's relationship with the sea.
The immersive quality of IMAX -- the images are six stories high and the sound
quality is unsurpassed -- will take audiences on an unforgettable journey; from the
volcanic coastline of Hawaii to the frozen inlets of Alaska, from dark mid-ocean
depths to the vibrant coral reefs of Palau where families tend the reef like a
garden, and the violent waves off the Oregon coast. We want our audience to
understand the importance of the ocean, but most of all, we want you to fall in love
with the sea.
